BREMERTON — Timely hitting and stellar pitching was the difference June 8, as the Kitsap BlueJackets edged out the Bend Elks 3-1 at Gene Lobe Field.
This was the first win of the season for the BlueJackets (1-4).
Jake Brewer (0-1) started on the mound for the BlueJackets, throwing seven innings while allowing zero earned runs. However, he did not pick up a decision due to the late offensive rally.
The first six innings were owned by both pitching staffs. Nick Johnson started for Bend, keeping up with Brewer and tossing seven innings while striking out four batters. He allowed just three hits.
Bend tacked on the first run in the top of the seventh on a double by Tommy Lane to score Collin Runge and take the 1-0 lead.
Joey Angyus (1-0) relieved Brewer in the top of the eighth to pick up the victory.
The BlueJackets waited until the bottom of the eighth inning to push across its first run of the game vs. the Elks (3-3). Gavin Blodgett started the inning by taking a pitch off his left arm by Henry Lin (0-1). Tony Ortiz drew a walk following Blodgett, and Bryce Peterson delivered at the plate for Kitsap with a double to the center field wall, scoring Blodgett and tying the game 1-1.
The next pitch, Luke Stampfl roped a single to left-center, scoring both Ortiz and Peterson to give the BlueJackets a 3-1 lead.
Jordan Knoll took the mound in the top of the ninth, working quickly to close out the ball game for his first save of the season.
Jack Strunc led the way at the plate for the Elks with four singles in the game.
Stampfl finished the game 2-3 with a pair of singles.
