The Bremerton boys basketball team showed signs of improvement this past week, losing a close game against North Kitsap Dec. 12, 61-52, before pulling out an impressive 68-58 victory against Klahowya Tuesday.

The Knights outscored Klahowya 22-13 in the second quarter to build a seven-point halftime lead. Jarrell Flora scored 15 points and Josh Koets added 14, while KSS’ Andre Moore Jr. scored a game-high 23 in the losing effort.

The girls team manufactured its first win of the season Tuesday, edging Klahowya 57-52 at home. The Lady Knights (1-6) had lost six straight games to open the season.

With three scorers in double figures — Jalen Carpenter (14), Sarah Streutker (14) and Kelsey Johnson (10) — Bremerton created just enough offense to pull away from a persistent KSS team in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Eagles 20-11.

The team travels to Bonney Lake Tuesday before a two-week break for the holidays.

Swimming

Coach Justin Adrian said Wednesday the Bremerton boys swim and dive team has made huge strides since its season-opening meet against Port Angeles Dec. 9.

“We’ve seen some vast improvements over the course of the season,” Adrian said. “We’ve had a lot of guys step up in varsity swims, it’s really cool.”

And much of the credit, Adrian added, should go to assistant coaches Jeff Kirk and Chriss Kukyendall, both of whom stepped in at the beginning of the season.

“They are great with the swimmers who are less experienced,” Adrian said.

BHS competes Jan. 8 against Kingston and North Kitsap.
