The Bremerton High School boys basketball team will face perennial powerhouse Rainier Beach High School in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament.
The Knights (16-7) lost consecutive seeding games Friday and Saturday after securing a berth to the tournament last week and will play at noon Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome.
Rainier Beach (22-3) is ranked No. 2 in the state and won the Metro League title. The Vikings are 22-0 against teams from Washington, with their only losses coming to Oregon schools in December.
The team is making its 13th consecutive state-tournament appearance, winning it in 2002, 2003 and 2008 and placing second in 2001 and 2004.
A win over the Vikings would propel Bremerton to a matchup Thursday against the winner of Wednesday’s Union High School-North Central High School game.
The tournament is double-elimination, meaning the Knights’ will play again Thursday regardless of Wednesday’s outcome.
Bremerton lost 66-50 to Franklin Pierce High School on Friday and 61-56 to Renton High School on Saturday, dropping to a No. 8 seed. This is the Knights first appearance at state since 1999, when it finished fifth.
