Pumas beat Victoria
The Kitsap Pumas couldn’t score until the final 10 minutes, but it was better late than never for the Bremerton soccer squad that won its second straight game of the season Sunday.
Pumas center midfielder Matt Friesen scored on a penalty kick in the 80th minute before Cameron Hepple connected on the game-winning goal in the 86th minute en route to a 2-1 victory against the Victoria Highlanders at Bremerton Memorial Stadium.
The game was Kitsap’s first home match of the year.
Victoria’s lone goal came at the end of the first half when Kitsap’s Taylor Hyde committed a foul. Jordie Hughes of the Highlanders scored on the penalty kick to give Victoria a 1-0 advantage.
Kitsap improved to 2-0 with the win Sunday, totaling six points for the season, and next hosts the Washington Crossfire Saturday, May 14 at home. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
Klahowya boys lacrosse loses to Sammamish
The Klahowya Secondary School boys lacrosse team is on the eve of a postseason run, but the Eagles couldn’t muster enough to overcome Sammamish High School.
Klahowya lost to Sammamish 13-10 at Newport High School in Bellevue May 6. Tyler Wright led the winning team with five goals.
Despite dropping its third game of the year, Klahowya still has a three-game lead in the Olympic Conference standings. Gig Harbor High School is currently in second place with one week left before the postseason.
Klahowya girls lacrosse stays unbeaten
Jacky Hennegan continues to keep her school on top, and undefeated.
Hennegan netted eight goals to lead Klahowya Secondary School to an 18-3 win against Tahoma High School in Maple Valley May 5.
Klahowya improved to 12-0-0 after the 15-point victory last week, and remain in first place in the Southwest Conference. The Eagles are two games ahead of second-place Garfield High School (Seattle). Tahoma dropped to 1-11-0 after the loss.
Additional Klahowya leaders included Ruthie Hawley, who scored two goals, three assists and a ground ball, and Rocki Winkler, who tallied two goals and an assist.
Katie Smiley notched two goals and two ground balls for Klahowya. Kelsey Gleeson also earned two goals, two assists and two ground balls. Sheri McCarty picked up a save.
Hennegan also scored two assists and four ground balls.
The Eagles wrap up the regular season this week before entering postseason play.
Basketball camp comes to Crosspoint
Total Package Hoops will host an advanced skills basketball camp at Crosspoint Academy in Bremerton June 28-30.
Girls and boys in grades 4 through 9 can participate at the camp, which will take place at the private school’s gymnasium. Cost is $85. Those interested in attending are encouraged to bring their own basketballs and pre-register at www.totalpackagehoops.com.
Students in grades 4 to 6 will train from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and young athletes in grades 7 to 9 will play from noon to 3 p.m.
The camp’s coaching staff includes Craig Murray, Megan Murray, Rick Walker and players from Total Package Premier, a private Kitsap basketball club program. Its goal is to stress ethics and fundamentals to young boys and girls basketball players.

Olympic sells Mariners tickets
The Olympic High School baseball team defeated Foss High School at Safeco Field in Seattle last month, but in order to be invited back in 2012, the Trojans need to reach their goal of selling 1,000 Seattle Mariners tickets.
So far, the school has sold about 300 tickets for the June 2 game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Olympic Athletic Director Nate Andrews said Monday.
The seats are in the 300 level and are on sale for $12, $4 of that will go directly to the program. The face value price is $20. Any individual or group who purchases 25 or more tickets for the Mariners game will have their name or business shown on the large television screen during the game.
Andrews also added that tickets can be purchased for friends, family, co-workers, employees or donated to the school’s students via a drawing.
If tickets need to be mailed, the order deadline is May 27.

Three Bremerton youth wrestlers win state titles
Savanah Sinclair, Lars Michaelson and Heaven Kemp-Sinclair, all of Bremerton, each won their first titles at the 2011 Washington State Wrestling Association’s Kids Freestyle State Championships in Spokane May 7.
Sinclair was victorious in the 36-pound Pee Wee weight class, while Michaelson and Kemp-Sinclair won the 42-pound Pee Wee and 70-pound schoolboy/girl divisions, respectively.
The three champions helped lead nine other Kitsap County youth wrestlers in the Northwest Washington Wrestling Club to a first-place finish in the Bantam division, and a third-place showing in the Pee Wee division. The club ended the weekend fifth overall.
Silverdale club wins state
The Olympic Gymnastics Center of Silverdale won the 2011 Level 5 state championship in Pasco April 30.
The private club placed first in the small team division, scoring 111.45.
MaKenna Mullen, of Seabeck, finished first in the floor event and third in the all-around, scoring 37.175.
Bailey Re, of Silverdale, placed second in the all-around with a score of 37.025. Gabby Miller, of Bremerton, competed in the 9-year-old division and was 6th in the all-around with a total of 36.725. She also placed first in the vault with a score of 9.4. Ally Miller, Gabby’s twin sister, finished eighth in the all-around. Aleyanna Mcquillan, of Belfair, was 11th in the all-around for the 10-year-old division.
Jessica Bonafilia, of Silverdale, competed in the 13-year-old group and placed 15th in the all-around.
Alison Pariera, of Poulsbo, was in the 14-year-old division and placed first in the all-around scoring. She finished with a score of 36.75.
Two Pumas players earn league honors
For the first time in the franchise’s three-year history, the Kitsap Pumas had two players named to the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League Team of the Week, the soccer organization announced May 5.
Midfielders Matt Friesen and Kyle Johnson earned league honors after each scoring goals in a 2-0 victory against the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency May 1.
The league selects its top 11 players each week for recognition.
Trojans beat Klahowya
The Olympic High School Trojans defeated Klahowya Secondary School 9-8 at home Monday to clinch a spot in the Class 2A sub-district tournament, set for Friday in Enumclaw.
Olympic earned at least a No. 5 seed, while Klahowya ended the season with a 5-11 overall record, 5-10 against the Olympic League. The Trojans (8-9, 7-8) were led by Christina Bigelow, who went 3-for-4 with a double.
