Olympic College softball team clinches fourth straight playoff spot
Despite its slim chances last week, the Olympic College softball team managed to punch a ticket to the playoffs. The Rangers swept Edmonds Community College in a doubleheader May 14 to clinch a berth in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges tournament. Olympic College beat winless Edmonds 15-0 twice to improve to 12-12 in league play, 14-15 overall. The Rangers will make their fourth straight playoff appearance when they open the tournament Friday against Pierce College (Tacoma) at 9:30 a.m. The second game is slated to start at 1:30 p.m. Games are played at Delta Park in Portland, Ore. The tournament’s format is double-elimination. Pierce College went 28-2, 34-7 during the regular season.
Olympic hosts summer baseball program
The Olympic Summer Baseball Club will conduct tryouts for current students in grades 8 and 9 who plan to attend Olympic High School. The tryouts are scheduled for Wednesday, May 25 at 3 p.m. They will be hosted at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. The program competes under the umbrella of American Legion Baseball. Bremerton beats Wilson to clinch state spot
The Bremerton High School boys soccer team is back in the state tournament for the first time in 20 years.
The Knights defeated Wilson High School (Tacoma) 3-2 at the Lincoln Bowl May 14, securing a berth in the Class 3A state tournament, their first since 1991. The team also avoided being charged with another red card. One more would preclude the team from finishing the game or advancing.
James Hill scored Bremerton’s first goal in the 11th minute with an assist from Nick Riders to tie the game at 1-1. Alex Correll’s goal in the 31st minute gave the Knights a 2-1 advantage. Both teams were tied after regulation. Bremerton defeated Wilson 4-2 in penalty kicks to win the game. Riders notched the final goal for Bremerton in the shootout.
Olympic High baseball bounced from districts
The Olympic High School baseball team’s season is over. The Trojans lost 1-0 to White River High School (Buckley) in a loser-out Class 2A West Central District game May 14. The game was played at Foss High School in Tacoma.
White River scored the game’s only run in the first inning. Pitcher Trevor Lubking threw a one-hit shutout for the Hornets. Olympic pitcher Joe Stevick recorded five strikeouts and allowed three hits in the loss.
Klahowya boys lacrosse loses
The Klahowya Secondary School boys lacrosse team watched its chances for a state title vanish last weekend. The Eagles, seeded No. 3 in the Olympic Conference, lost 14-3 to Providence Classical Christian School (Lynnwood) in the first round of the playoffs May 13. The game was played at Klahowya.
Ryan Morris scored five goals to lead top-seeded Providence, who advanced to the quarterfinals. Klahowya was led by Kevin Bastien and Jeff Haga, who each scored a goal in the loss. Nehemiah Salo totaled nine saves.
The Eagles had won eight of their last nine games entering the postseason, but were stumped by Providence’s offense.
Klahowya, under head coach Rob Hawley, finished the 2011 season with a record of 11-4-0.
Pumas defeat Washington
The Kitsap Pumas continue to streak.
The Bremerton soccer squad remained undefeated after beating the Washington Crossfire 3-0 at home May 14. Taylor Hyde, Cameron Hepple and Warlen Silva scored all three of Kitsap’s goals in the second half. David Gray, Silva and Greg Miley were credited with assists.
The Pumas improved to 3-0 with the win. They next play the Portland Timbers U23 team Saturday at home.
Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Rangers baseball misses playoffs
The Olympic College baseball team lost its last four games last week to end the season. The Rangers were eliminated from playoff contention as a result of the sweep.
Everett Community College defeated the Rangers 6-3 and 7-1 May 12, and 7-5 and 1-0 May 13. The Thursday doubleheader was played in Everett, while Friday’s games were held at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
Olympic College baseball finished the season 6-18 in league play, 9-27-1 overall. The team lost nine games by one run and five contests by two runs apiece.
Former CK pitcher earns honors
Western Washington University standout and former Central Kitsap High School hurler Erika Quint was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Year, the league announced May 10. The senior helped lead the Vikings to a 36-14 record this season, earning a trip to the NCAA Division II West sub-regionals in California.
Quint, who also pitched for Olympic College, went 28-5 with a 1.89 ERA in 2011. She totaled 286 strikeouts, a new school and league record. Her win tally is also the most in Western’s history. Quint’s older sister, Jackie Evanson, won the same award in 2007.
In addition, Quint was named to the conference’s all-star first team. She was one of four unanimous selections.
Garguile, Cooper lead Crosspoint
Jordan Cooper and Grace Garguile were among the winners from Crosspoint Academy at the Sea-Tac league championship track meet last week. Cooper won the 100- and 200-meter runs with times of 11.76 and 23.44, respectively.
Josh Thompson also led the Warriors with victories in the 110 and 300 hurdles events. Justin Holland placed fourth and third in the shot put and javelin, respectively.
Tyler Holland finished eighth in both events. Kevin Mason finished second in the pole vault. Meanwhile, Garguile won the 100 and 400 runs with times of 13.36 and 1:01.08, respectively. She also placed second in the 200 run with a time of 27.25. Kylie Esselstrom was fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 20.04.
Club hosts tennis championships
The Bremerton Tennis and Athletic Club will host the 64th annual Outback Steakhouse Senior Tennis Championships May 27-29. Scheduled events include men’s and women’s singles and doubles matches for ages 35-80, in addition to mixed doubles, ages 35-55. The entry deadline is May 22. Those interested can signup on pnw.usta.com. The event will include a dinner from the restaurant, free to all players, Saturday.

Discount Mariners tickets on sale
The Olympic High School baseball program needs to sell 600 more tickets for another invitation to Safeco Field next season.
The school is required to sell 1,000 Seattle Mariners tickets to be eligible to play at the stadium again in 2012. They beat Foss High School (Tacoma) last month in Seattle. Tickets are for the June 2 game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The seats are in the 300 level and are on sale for $12. If tickets need to be mailed, the order deadline is May 27.
