Delicino wins track title for OC

Jeremy Delicino, a freshman at Olympic College, which recently brought back its track program after a 30-year hiatus, is a conference champion in his first season.

Delicino won the men’s 10,000-meter event with a time of 32:57.42 at the 2011 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Championships May 24. The meet was held at Spokane Falls Community College.

Delicino also placed seventh in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:59.50. Meanwhile, the women’s squad was led by performances by Irene Moore and Michelle Glass.

Moore placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.43. Glass finished second in the high jump.

Taylor Person ended the meet with a sixth-place showing in the triple jump. The men’s and women’s teams finished 10th and ninth at the final meet of the year, respectively. A total of 11 schools competed.

Pumas, Timbers end game in scoreless draw

The Kitsap Pumas are still undefeated, but they couldn’t score a goal against the Portland Timbers U23 last Saturday night at Bremerton Memorial Stadium.

The two squads ended their game in a 0-0 draw. Kitsap is 3-0-1 following the tie, while Portland is 1-1-1.

The Pumas remain in first place in the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League Northwest Division. Rookie goalkeeper Bryan Meredith recorded the shutout for the Pumas. Kitsap next plays the Tacoma Tide at the Stadium Bowl Friday.

The game is the first of a five-game road trip in the next 16 days. Portland, the defending league champions, are currently in third place in the division. The Timbers play Tacoma at Clackamas High School in Oregon Sunday.

All-league team announced

The Olympic League named its all-league baseball selections May 20, with standouts from Klahowya Secondary School, Bremerton and Olympic high schools earning honors.

Bremerton senior third baseman Devin Garcia, Klahowya senior outfielder Joe Valley and Olympic senior outfielder Christopher Campbell were all named to the first team.

Olympic earned four spots on the second team with senior first baseman Joe Stevick, junior third baseman Christian Bernett, senior shortstop Patrick Middleton and senior utility hitter Spencer Hansen all making the squad.

Bremerton sophomore outfielder Matt Noll also made the second team. Honorable mentions included Olympic’s Shane Matheny, Danny Sullivan, Devin Atalig, Ryan Skoubo and Darle Towne. Klahowya’s Drew Fagan was also recognized on the honorable mention team, along with Bremerton’s Theo Robinson, Eli Fultz and Kaden Tomlinson.

Crosspoint trio wins at districts

The Crosspoint Academy track and field team will be represented at state after winning three tri-district events last week.

Jordan Cooper won the 200-meter run at the Class 2B tri-district championships. Cooper finished with a time of 23.02, and as a result, advances to the state championships.

Other Crosspoint winners included Josh Thompson and Grace Garguile, who won the 110-meter hurdles and 100-meter run, respectively.

Thompson finished with a time of 15.53, while Garguile ended with a time of 12.70.

Garguile also placed second and fifth in the 400- and 200-meter runs, respectively.

Meanwhile, Jordan Barton advanced to state after placing third in the 100-meter with a time of 13.33. Kelvin Mason finished second in the pole vault. Thompson also placed second in the 300-meter hurdles.

The top three boys and two girls in each event advanced to state this week. The 2B state championship meet starts Friday at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

Weightlifters win gold at regionals

Ricco Morales, Rex Clawson and Robert Pool each won weightlifting gold medals at the 2011 Special Olympics Washington Southwest Regional competition May 20. Geni Hanson also won a silver medal at the event. Morales set a personal record, lifting 735 total pounds. Clawson lifted 965 pounds, while Hanson and Pool totaled 245 and 370 pounds, respectively.

Conditioning Program begins

The Summer Conditioning Program, which is designed to help students in grades 7-12 stay fit during the summer, will host a parent and athlete night on Friday, June 17.

The event will be hosted at the Silverdale Fire Station community room at 6:30 p.m. Participants in the program meet Monday through Friday from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at various locations starting June 22. Bittersweet week for Eagles lacrosse

The season is over for the Klahowya Secondary School girls lacrosse team, which came within one game of the Division II championship. Bellevue East defeated the Eagles 17-16 in triple overtime at the state semifinals, hosted at Central Kitsap Junior High School May 18. The loss was Klahowya’s first and only loss of the year.

Kayla Miller scored the game-winner for Bellevue East in the first 15 seconds of the sudden death period. Jacky Hennegan led Klahowya with five goals, five draw controls and an assist. Kelsey Gleeson and Rocki Winkler each scored three goals in the loss.

Klahowya finished the season 13-1-0. The Washington Lacrosse Association named Hennegan to the first team of the All-State squad last week. Meanwhile, senior defender Hailee Richards and senior midfielder Katie Smiley were each named to the second team.

ISPN to air BlueJackets game

Kevin Mac will broadcast live coverage of the ISPN Sports Show from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday with highlights and interviews from the past week of high school sports on www.ispnsports.com. The network is scheduled to broadcast the Kitsap BlueJackets’ baseball game against the Cowlitz Black Bears at 6 p.m. The three-game series runs from June 7-9.
