More than halfway through the season, Bremerton High School boys soccer coach Randy Lund has made his expectations clear.
“Our goal is to win the Olympic League,” he said.
If the Knights continue scoring goals at the rate they have the past two weeks, they could accomplish that feat. Bremerton (6-2-2 overall, 5-1-1 league) has scored 13 goals the past three matches, all wins, while allowing three.
Sophomore Nick Riders has emerged as one of the league’s most prolific scorers over that span, notching three goals in a 4-1 win Tuesday over Sequim High School.
Riders’ scoring output picked up about three weeks ago when Lund moved Matt Olson, the league’s leading scorer last year, from forward to midfield.
The switch solidified Bremerton in the middle-third of the field, creating additional scoring opportunities for the forwards while also making the team more potent on the counterattack.
“Everybody has been gelling since we made that move,” Lund said. “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.”
But to win the league championship, the Knights must make up some ground in the standings.
As of Wednesday, the Knights and Kingston High School are tied for second place behind North Kitsap High School, undefeated this season and ranked No. 8 in the state.
The Vikings (8-0-0, 6-0-0) defeated Bremerton 3-0 April 8 in a game Lund said was closer than the score indicated. One of North Kitsap’s goals occurred when Bremerton scored against itself, Lund said, and another happened due to a Bremerton miscommunication in the penalty box.
