An official announcement regarding Bremerton High School’s classification for the 2010-12 seasons had not been made at press time.

It is speculated the Class 3A Knights could drop to 2A based on enrollment numbers, a shift that would alter the school’s future schedules and opponents and potentially shake up the 3A/2A Olympic League, to which the Knights currently belong.

“There has not been any news for BHS,” athletic director George Duarte said in an email Wednesday.

However, Duarte added that when the West Central District III executive board met Monday, “We were still considered 3A but close to getting bumped” and that “it would take three 2A schools to opt up (to 3A) to bump BHS to 2A.”

Duarte said he and other Olympic League athletic directors, as well as school principals, were scheduled to meet Wednesday to review the different scenarios and discuss a course of action for the league moving forward.

The Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association, the state’s governing body of high school sports, set Tuesday as the deadline for schools wishing to opt up.

North Kitsap, Olympic and Port Angeles all are on the edge between 3A and 2A and could be impacted as well.

The WIAA recently changed the way it decides school classifications. Rather than 17 percent of schools comprising each classification, it will take 34 percent for 3A and 2A, giving it more flexibility in deciding where to draw the line between classifications.

“Member schools are still submitting information about their placement in classifications,” the WIAA stated on its Web site Tuesday. “The WIAA staff hopes to have the final decisions by Monday … once all of the information has been collected.”
