Bremerton’s Kyle Kennedy placed fifth in the boys javelin over the weekend at the Class 3A state track and field championships at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
The sophomore posted a personal-best 187-foot-8-inch throw in Saturday’s final. Kennedy also qualified for state in 2008, finishing ninth at 175-07.
Teammate Jarell Flora, a junior who had never participated in track prior to this season, qualified for the finals in the boys 400-meter race, taking sixth in 50.00 seconds. Michael Berry of Rainier Beach won in a landslide at 47.93, more than a full second ahead of second-place finisher Josh Moore of Franklin Pierce (49.23).
Flora and Kennedy combined for seven points in the boys’ team standings, good for 29th overall.
