KINGSTON — The Kingston Buccaneers girls soccer team was frustrated.
It showed on their faces, which were drawn and gloomy, and it could be heard in their voices, which said, “This is ridiculous, we should be winning, we’re not playing our best.”
They had reason for the outcries.
In the first 40 minutes of the Bucs home game against the Sequim Wolves, they only had two shots on goal. They had difficulty marking the ball and controlling their passing game, as several passes were aimed at no one or went long and out.
The first half came to a close with both teams knotted 0-0.
“We’re ball chasing because we don’t mark the ball in the first place. We’re not talking, we need to put responsibility on it. We do need to step it up a notch,” head coach Craig Smith told the less-than-pleased Bucs at halftime. “We can win this game, we just have to set up shots. Play smart and talk to each other.”
So they did.
The Bucs looked like a completely different set of soccer stars in the final 40 minutes of play, posting nine shots on goal, claiming the shutout, 3-0, victory.
Within 12 minutes freshman midfielder/forward/defender Victoria Gerken passed the ball to sophomore midfielder Dana Van Wyck, who was about 20 yards out from the goal. The bench, anticipating the outcome, excitedly said, “Oh that’s Dana’s.” A quick and smart Van Wyck collected herself and with her left foot — she’s not a left-footed kicker — took the shot, which sailed into the right corner of the net, snagging her first-ever varsity goal.
“Dana had a great game, the best game I’ve seen,” Smith said. “That was the best shot of the game.”
And the scores kept coming.
Smith, who was pacing the sideline kept calling, “Get it to Sophia.”
So they did.
Within four minutes of the Bucs’ first goal newbie sophomore defender Sophia Baetz collected the ball, turned on the speed and blew by a few Wolves’ defenders. She took the shot which deflected off the goal’s right post. Baetz moved quick to regain the ball and instead of trying to force the shot had the wherewithal to cross it over to senior midfielder/forward Meghan Antoni, who waited perfectly in front of the goal. Antoni, who Smith said was the best person to get the ball to, kicked it in.
“It was a strong creative play and good off the ball movement by Sophia,” he said. “That was good soccer. That was a good goal.”
With less than a minute left, sophomore Renee Henderson got the ball to Antoni, who plays relentless and is all over the field at all times. Antoni pushed the ball past three Wolves, took a clean shot and nailed her second goal of the game.
Buc senior keeper Rae-Ann McConnell had a handful of key saves to ensure Kingston’s shutout effort.
On Thursday the Bucs hosted Klahowya and lost 1-0. Smith said it was a game Kingston played well and could’ve won, however, the Bucs didn’t get rolling on offense until the second half.
On Tuesday the Bucs play Olympic at the North Kitsap Stadium. Game starts at 6:45 p.m.
