Bucs deny Bulldogs a win | Girls basketball

The North Mason Bulldogs varsity team went home still without a league win Dec. 18.

KINGSTON — The North Mason Bulldogs varsity team went home still without a league win Dec. 18.

The Kingston Buccaneers defeated the Bulldogs 37-23 in the Kingston High School Gymnasium.

The Bucs are now 3-3, tied for fifth in the Olympic League with the North Kitsap Vikings.

The Bulldogs are 0-7.

The win for the Bucs was their fourth this season.

The team’s defense is there, Kingston head coach Matthew Smith said. Kingston kept the Bulldogs from scoring double digits during all four quarters. The Bulldogs were held to two points in the third quarter.

Kingston’s Savannah Turrieta was the top scorer of the game, shooting for a total of 15 points. Smith said Turrieta can do it all, including offensive drives in the hole and hitting three-point shots.

“Turrieta’s scoring is helping keep us in the game,” Smith said.

On defense Katelyn Carper had 12 steals. Drew Clark earned 16 rebounds and was one point away from earning a double-double — she scored nine points.

The Bucs pressured the Bulldog defense through the entire game, Smith said. He said the Bulldogs had about three rebounds.

“It wasn’t easy for them at all,” Smith said of the Bulldogs. “We pressured the ball well.”

The Bucs are next up against the North Kitsap Vikings at home, Dec. 21. Junior Varsity plays at 5:15 p.m., Varsity starts at 7 p.m. Smith said if the Bucs can keep the Vikings score in the 30s, the Bucs can win it.

“It’s going to be a battle,” Smith said.
