SUMNER — The Sumner Spartans defeated the Kingston Buccaneers in the first round of the WIAA State 2A championship.

The Spartans took the lead early on, with Alyssa Murray and Kaylie Rozell kicking in two unassisted goals before six minutes had passed.

Rozell shot a third goal in the second half before Kingston was able to bring one home for themselves.

Rachel Stowell finished the night, scoring at the 75-minute mark.

Though the Bucs “evened out with them” after the first two goals, Kingston coach Craig Smith said it was like playing against a college team. For one, the majority of Sumner players were 3-4 inches taller than the Bucs, he said. The field was also larger than the Bucs are used to, Smith said.

“There’s a reason why they’re undefeated,” Smith said of the Spartans.

“We did score a goal on them,” Smith added. “That made us feel good.”

The Spartans are now among the top eight contenders for the state championship. The team takes on Archbishop Murphy Saturday, Nov. 10, at Sunset Chev Stadium. The game begins at 2 p.m.

The Spartans are undefeated, but the Wildcats may prove to be a a tough opponent. They sit at the top of the Cascade League 2A, went 14-0-0 in their regular season and 20-0-0 overall.
