The Kingston High Buccaneers crumbled against the undefeated Sequim High Wolves, ruining the Bucs chance at a league title.

The Bucs (3-3 for the season, 2-2 in the league) needed to beat the Wolves (5-1, 4-0) in order to play for the Olympic League title.

The game ended with a 56-28 Wolves victory, making it a two-team competition for the league title.

The first quarter of the game started off quick for the Bucs, forcing a fumble on the Wolves at the Bucs 20 yard line. After an incomplete pass, senior quarterback responded to the Wolves quick offense with a pass completion that resulted in a 69 yard touchdown.

However, senior wide receiver Stephen Gorman was slow to get up after making the play and would stay out the rest of the game with an injured leg.

The Wolves would respond to the Buc touchdown with an 88 yard kickoff return, that set the pace for the rest of the game.

This is the first time the Bucs faced the Wolves this season and Bucs head coach Daniel Novick felt the teams chances of winning had increased since their last meeting.

The Bucs lost to Port Angeles – the only other undefeated team in the league – 14-9 earlier in the season, but the close game had the Bucs prepared for another competitive match against the Wolves.

“We have been focusing on the Sequim match so we can get that league championship,” Novick said.

Though the team will face Bremerton High next Friday at 7 p.m. for the Kingston High homecoming, the coaches didn’t say a word about the game to the players, said assistant coach Scott McKay.

“I know it’s cliche to say, but you have to take it one game at a time,” McKay said.

McKay said the losses the Bucs experienced earlier in the season were due to mistakes the team made trying to play out of their comfort zone.

“If you go out and play your game, mistake free, you’re going to end up on top,” McKay said. “But sometimes players need to slow down and focus their game on the basics.”

Mistakes were something that kept the Bucs on the low-scoring side of the game against the Wolves, however.

By the end of the first half, the Bucs were down 42-14 after a long kickoff resulted in a fumble at the goal line and another quick Wolves touchdown.

Though The Bucs would score two more times, it would not be enough for the Sequim’s aggressive offense.

The Buccaneers play Bremerton High on Friday, Oct. 14 at Kingston as part of their homecoming celebration. The game starts at 7 p.m.
