When Jalyn Halstead and Nicole Jones aren’t competing on the court, they’re focused on school work and doing the Cat-Daddy dance with friends and teammates. “Love & Basketball” is their favorite flick.

The tandem led the Lady Trojans to a 51-36 victory against Klahowya Secondary School at home Tuesday night to secure a spot at the upcoming district tournament.

We caught up with the two after their win. Here’s what they had to say about being a captain, and more:

Q: How long have you been a team captain?

A: Both one season.

Q: What have you learned about being a captain?

A: Jones: You have to respect everyone on the court, even when we’re down. And we have to make sure everyone stays under control even if we get mad. We have to stay positive and be a leader on the court.

Q: What do you hope to teach your teammates?

A: Halstead: I want to teach them teamwork and being a good sport overall.

Q: What’s the biggest challenge about being a captain?

A: Halstead: The biggest challenge is trying to keep the team together when everyone gets frustrated.

Jones: When there’s drama, it affects the whole team, so we have to make sure to settle it and be a family.

Q: Favorite class?

A: Halstead: Sports medicine

Jones: Advanced sports medicine

Q: Favorite music?

A: Halstead: I listen to anything really.

Jones: I love rap music.

Q: What do you take away from clinching a playoff berth?

A: Halstead: It was a good way to end our league season with a winning streak. Jones: It was a good win especially in my last game.

Q: Team goals ahead?

A: Halstead: We want to make it to state, but one game at a time. Jones: I just want to play well and keep it up so we don’t slack off. We want to go to state.
