If there were any questions about the best senior baseball player in the West Sound, they seemed to be answered Thursday night.

Central Kitsap outfielder Caleb Brown hit home runs in both games to lead the Narrows League All-Stars to 13-3 and 7-4 wins against the Olympic League All-Stars in the 41st Kitsap Peninsula Senior Baseball Games at the Kitsap Fairgrounds Ballfields.

Brown, who has signed to play at the University of Washington, went 3-for-5 with two home runs, six RBI and a pair of walks in the two games on his 18th birthday. He was selected by coaches as MVP of the games afterward.

Ten players were nominated for next week’s state all-star game in Wenatchee. CK coach Bill Baxter said the following players were nominated in order: Brown; Eric Lane (second base, Port Angeles); Kramer Uvila (Infielder, North Kitsap); Jake Holbein (outfielder, Peninsula); Ben Grubb (catcher, Sequim); Jordan Green (outfielder, Klahowya); Donny DeFrang (outfielder, PA); Todd Dalrymple (catcher, South Kitsap); Dan Zylstra (shortstop, CK); and Mikey Marville (third baseman, PA).

“It was really hard,” said Baxter, who met with fellow coaches for the Narrows and Olympic teams, including South’s Jim Fairweather and Oly’s Nate Andrews, after the games to sort out the teams. “It’s one of those years where you have a lot of great kids.”

Brown left little speculation about his selection. He took an 0-2 pitch from PA’s Jake Madison over the center-field fence in the first inning of the first game for a three-run home run.

“The ball stayed straight and it was a fastball,” Brown said. “It worked out well.”

The Narrows team dominated throughout the first game as it scored four runs in the first inning and added six more in the third. NK’s Jamaal Smith hit a three-run homer in that inning and South’s Shawn Stayton had a two-RBI single.

“I just relaxed and had some fun,” said Stayton, who was an outfielder and catcher for the Wolves. “It was my lucky white cleats. Coach Fairweather won’t let us wear them during the season.”

Dalrymple and Stayton started both games for South, while Brown, Glen Hewey, Will Morris, who plans to play both football and baseball at Whitworth University in Spokane, and Zylstra were mainstays for the Cougars.

“I played on a summer team in South Kitsap in seventh and eighth grade,” said Morris, who went a combined 3-for-6 with an RBI, also including a rare steal for the big man. “It was fun to play with them again.”

For others, it was an opportunity. Dalrymple started the first game at third base.

“I haven’t played there, but it was fun,” he said, adding that he hadn’t played third base since his sophomore year. “That’s what this game is about.”

Dalrymple said he will play at Olympic College next year, but it also was an opportunity for others to showcase their skills for scouts. The OC coaching staff attended the games.

“If someone wants me, I’ll go,” said Mike O’Brien, who pitched three innings of relief in the second game following South starter Adam Douty. “Baseball is a key part of my life.”

The teams were tied, two-all, in the second game until the third inning when the Narrows scored four runs to take the lead for good. Hewey had a three-run triple with two outs in the inning.

For the Olympic League All-Stars, the losing effort still provided an opportunity to take the field once more.

Olympic outfielder Bryan Deszell said it was a blast to team up with players he’d been playing against.

“It was great,” Deszell said. “It’s cool seeing all the seniors. It’s a lot of good players.”

After the Trojans landed in the regional round of the state tournament with a heavy non-senior roster, Deszell said the games wrapped up his season perfectly.

“I was really happy with the team,” he said of the Trojans. “We were all really young. I was proud of them. Then to come here, it just feels good.”

Klahowya senior Green felt similarly after his Eagles fell to Kingston at districts.

“It’s definitely better to end it like this than how we ended it against Kingston,” Green said. “But most of (the Bucs) are on my summer team as well. So I’ve been playing with them for a while.”

Andrews said it’s always a good opportunity for the coaches as well.

“We’re definitely competitive when we’re facing each other,” Andrews said. “But for the coaches, we’re a fraternity. We live the same situations and experiences. Some of us go back a ways.”
