Central Kitsap’s racquets are hot at the right time.
The Cougars collectively won three of four preliminary matches Monday, having already advanced doubles tandem Andrew Kim and Cameron Gilman and singles player Arnel Hipolito by virtue of byes.
The team now has three doubles teams and two singles players in the Narrows League Tournament, which began yesterday and continues today.
Albert Dancel and Chris Martinez beat Mount Tahoma’s No. 1 doubles pair Monday in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 to advance, while Tim Plummer and Nick Carlo, CK’s No. 3 doubles team, cruised past Stadium’s No. 1, 6-1,6-0.
Yesterday’s doubles action featured three CK-Bellarmine Prep matches, with Dancel and Martinez facing Prep’s No. 1, Plummer and Carlo facing Prep’s No. 2, and Kim and Gilman, CK’s top seed, going against Prep’s No. 3. Results were unavailable at press time.
In singles play yesterday, CK’s Arnel Hipolito faced David Locascio, Stadium’s No. 2. Ben Miller, who advanced by sweeping Lincoln’s Toby Nguyen 6-0, 6-0 in prelims, drew Olympia’s top player, Hunter Woods.
All Narrows League Tournament matches are being played at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.
The Cougar volleyball team improved to 6-3 in Narrows League play with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-8) victory against Mount Tahoma on Thursday. Racheal Diehl led CK with 8 kills. Hayley McDermed added 10 assists and two aces, while Asha Hill had three aces and two blocks. Alexis Wesley chipped in with three blocks of her own.
CK finishes regular season play at Gig Harbor on Monday and the Narrows League Tournament follows, beginning Thursday.
In 3A action, Olympic dropped a wild first set against Bremerton Tuesday, but came back to win 3-1 (24-26, 25-12, 25-6, 25-16). Oly’s final regular season match is home against Port Angeles at 6:15 p.m. this Tuesday. The Trojans, like their soccer counterparts, (9-4 overall, 8-2 league) are positioned to play a one-game playoff against North Kitsap for the 3A Olympic League crown if both teams win out.
