CK’s Bartlett, Olympic’s Anchors highlight All-Kitsap team

The team was compiled by the sports writers for the Bremerton Patriot, Central Kitsap Reporter, Bainbridge Island Review, North Kitsap Herald and the Port Orchard Independent. Candidates for the team are nominated by the writers for their respective areas. The nominees are then voted on by the writers; the top vote getters make the teams. Up to three honorable mentions are also selected from each school for each sport. The teams include the best players from area schools that not only performed well individually, but played a role in the success of their team. Klahowya Secondary School, Olympic, Central Kitsap, Bremerton, Kingston, North Kitsap, South Kitsap and Bainbridge high schools are included.

Coach of the year – Dusty Anchors, Olympic: Anchors, in his third season with the school, led the Trojans to their first state appearance in school history after a 10-9 comeback victory at districts last month. Olympic scored eight straight runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning against Sumner High School to clinch the Class 2A state berth. The Trojans finished the 2011 season with a 12-13 record after going 6-16 in 2010. Anchors had only three seniors on the roster, which included mostly sophomores and juniors.

Pitcher – Katie Raben, Bainbridge, sophomore: Raben made the jump from junior varsity to varsity this season and was a major factor in the Spartans’ return to state. Raben posted a 9-4 record, a 1.39 ERA, an .84 WHIP, or walks and hits per innings, and struck out 129 batters. She also threw 12 complete games and six shutouts.

Pitcher – Hailey Willmann, Bainbridge, junior: Willmann made a major contribution to the team wherever she played. She was strong in the circle with a 7-3 record, a 2.11 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP with 72 strikeouts.

Pitcher – Emilly Cunningham, South Kitsap, senior: Cunningham served as the Wolves’ top starter and No. 4 hitter in the lineup. She finished with a 12-5 record and a 2.34 ERA. Cunningham averaged 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings, while allowing just 1.8 walks.

Pitcher – Katie Lomas, Kingston, junior: Lomas pitched every game for Kingston, ending the regular season 13-5 overall and 12-4 in the league.

Catcher – Ericka Hobson, South Kitsap, junior: Hobson, a second-year starter, finished with a .308 batting average and a .492 on-base percentage. She also had two doubles, a triple and 13 RBI this season.

First baseman – Taylor Greenfield, Bainbridge, junior: Greenfield was a steady presence at the plate, posting a .388 batting average, an .490 on-base percentage and a .450 slugging percentage with five doubles and 21 RBI. She was also strong in the field, leading the team with a .983 fielding percentage as Bainbridge made it to the 3A state title game for the third year in a row.

Second baseman – Alexa Ekonomakis, Kingston, junior: On offense, Ekonomakis worked to get those on base home. Head coach Joe Schiel said she became the “go-to-person” for the winning RBI near the end of multiple games throughout the 2010-11 season.

She ended the season with a batting average of .585, with 18 RBIs, two home runs and 22 runs out of 32 hits (64 at bats).

Shortstop – Jenna Bartlett, Central Kitsap, senior: Bartlett hit .515 for the Cougars, including eight doubles, three triples and six home runs this season. She struck out just three times on the year. Bartlett (pictured) also helped the Cougars’ offense with 19 RBI en route to a district postseason berth. 

Third baseman – Greta Coleman, Kingston, junior: With 31 hits out of 53 at-bats, accumulating a .585 batting average, Coleman contributed both offensively and defensively to the team.

On defense, Coleman was described by head coach Joe Schiel as “a very dominant force at the plate and a solid third baseman.”

Coleman finished with 31 RBIs, six home runs and 17 runs.

Outfielder – Clara Dunn, Bainbridge, senior: Dunn, a four-year starter, had a stellar season. She posted a .478 batting average, a .529 on-base percentage and an .804 slugging percentage with 10 doubles, four triples, four home runs and 74 total bases.

Outfielder – Meagan Ransier, South Kitsap, senior: Ransier, who plans to play next season at Pacific Lutheran University, has been one of the Wolves’ most versatile athletes in recent seasons.

She mostly played in center field this season after being a full-time catcher in 2009 and starting at backstop and shortstop in 2010.

In addition to displaying outstanding range in the outfield, Ransier hit .474 with a .697 on-base percentage.

She also led the Wolves in doubles (nine) and steals (four), while adding two triples, one home run and 14 RBI.

Outfielder – Kari Fetters, Central Kitsap, junior: Fetters helped lead Central Kitsap to another postseason apperance, hitting .450 and totaling a .530 on-base percentage. She provided the Cougars with another option in the outfield for head coach Bruce Welling.
