Michael Krug has developed a reputation as a successful coach in the Westsound FC soccer program.

He hopes the trend will continue at the high-school level.

South Kitsap athletic director Ed Santos announced Tuesday that he selected Krug among five other candidates to replace Scott Sodorff as the school’s girls soccer coach. Sodorff, who had a 19-10-4 record, and his wife, Jamie, decided to move back to California.

Santos said Krug’s club success made him an appealing candidate for the school.

In June, Krug’s Westsound FC ’90 squad, which plays in the state’s Premier Division, advanced to the Far West Regional Championships.

He has guided Westsound FC for eight years and has spent 15 years coaching on the Kitsap Peninsula.

“He’s had a great record, coached some great teams and currently coaches a bunch of our boys that headed to the U.S. club regionals,” Santos said. “He’s a very accomplished coach and we’re very happy and excited to have him.”

Krug, 37, played soccer for the Wolves in 1987 before his family moved to Portland.

He’s one of several South coaches who competed at the school, including John Callaghan (boys basketball), Jim Fairweather (baseball), Tami Lester-Dame (boys swimming), Chad Nass (wrestling) and Joanne Warren (track and field).

“It was pretty exciting,” Krug said. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to come back to the place where I played.”

This will be his first time coaching girls, but he is familiar with many of the players through working with Westsound FC director of coaching Tim Reynolds.

He said the area has produced plenty of talent that will aid his objective to sustain success.

Krug said he believes in putting his players in motion to create opportunities and exploit the disadvantages of opponents.

“I think it will be an exciting brand of ball,” he said. “I think the people watching will start seeing the development of play on the pitch.”

South’s boys soccer position remains open.

Santos focused on filling the girls position first because the season is approaching, but hopes to fill the boys job later in the year.

Eric Bergeson, who resigned in June, once coached both programs at South.

Santos said he hasn’t discussed that possibility with Krug.

Krug, who works as an engineer on Fox Island, said he wants to focus on the girls job before he thinks about taking on another role.

He said it also would be difficult because high-school coaches aren’t allowed to coach club teams during the same season, which means he would have to quit Westsound FC, but he wouldn’t rule it out.

“I want to get in the program, try it and hopefully it will be a great experience,” Krug said. “I’ll reevaluate at the end of the season.”
