Davis leads Bremerton to first league title since 2014

Standout sophomore guard Jalen Davis led the Bremerton Knights to its first Olympic League title since 2014, scoring 32 points as they beat the Sequim Wolves 76-65 Feb. 12 in a tie-breaker game at North Kitsap High School.

Both teams came into the game tied atop the league at 12-2. Bremerton coach Jeremiah Davis noted the loss to Sequim two days prior served as fuel to get the win and secure the league title.

“We did a lot of self-reflecting on the game and a lot of our mistakes through the year,” he said. “When we can look back on them, a different mentality comes out on the court.”

The first quarter of the game saw the Knights jump out to a fast start with a three-pointer from Davis. From there on out, Bremerton was able to find ways to obtain quick scores, whether it was through forced turnovers or finding different ways to exploit the Sequim defense.

The second quarter began with more of the same, with the Knights continuing to find ways to score. Bremerton’s aggressive nature on defense in the second allowed them to generate many offensive possessions for themselves. Only four Knights accounted for Bremerton’s scoring in the second, but tallying up a total of 21 points, keeping ahead of the offensive burst the Wolves also found in the second quarter.

“I feel like our energy just changed the game,” Knight Jaydon Turner said. “In this game, the rebounding helped because the last game [against Sequim], they got some second-chance points.”

Knight Frank Allen hammered down a slam dunk at the 5:45 mark of the third quarter as the two teams began to swap leads during the middle portion of the quarter.

Allen also landed a splash three-pointer with four minutes remaining in the quarter, and then scored a driving layup, allowing the Knights to increase their lead to two possessions. A Sequim turnover led to Davis scoring on a fastbreak layup, pushing Bremerton’s lead to seven.

Both offenses executed at a high level throughout the fourth quarter. In spite of that, the Knights’ lead proved to be insurmountable for Sequim. The Wolves attempted a full-court press, but could not contain Bremerton throughout the final period.

“We were winning more 50-50 balls and putting everything on the table,” Allen said.
