While South Kitsap finished one win away from advancing to state for the first time since 2003, the Wolves captured their only Narrows championship in five years.

South finished with a 17-5 record that was highlighted by several strong individual performers.

That was enough for the Wolves to land two starters and three honorable mention performers on the 2010 All-Kitsap County Fastpitch Team as voted on by the sports editors of the Kitsap News Group.

The following is the 2010 All-Kitsap County Fastpitch Team:

P — Katie Lomas, sophomore, Kingston: Lomas was the Buccaneers’ workhorse on the mound, pitching 112 2/3 innings in 18 games this year. She struck out 97 batters and walked 40 en route to a 2.86 ERA. She also recorded three shutouts and posted a fielding percentage of .927. At the plate, Lomas had a batting average of .232, with seven RBI and an on-base percentage of .368.

P– Haylee Baker, senior, Bainbridge: The Metro League MVP led the Spartans with a 11-1 record and 1.71 ERA as a senior. Baker allowed only 58 hits and threw four shutouts, striking out 69 in 77.67 innings. She also played shortstop, batting .424 with 20 RBI and two home runs.

P– Lauren Reichert, senior, Bainbridge: Reichert (8-6) pitched 80 innings with a 1.92 ERA. The senior had 65 strikeouts against 27 walks, and also played third base and shortstop. Reichert finished the season with a batting average of .452, slugging .548 with nine doubles and 29 RBI. Reichert

P – Kim Chase, senior, Central Kitsap: Chase was Central Kitsap’s No. 1 pitcher and received the majority of the starts this season, leading her team to the Class 4A West Central District III tournament with a 12-5 record, 1.88 ERA and 30 strikeouts to 19 walks.

P – Emilly Cunningham, junior, South Kitsap: Cunningham might be the school’s best all-around player. In addition to serving as the Wolves’ No. 1 starter, where she had a 9-4 record with a 3.52 ERA, including 69 strikeouts against 23 walks in 87 innings pitched, she also hits in the middle of the lineup. Cunningham led South with a .519 batting average and .759 on-base percentage. She also had a team-high two home runs, 18 RBI, six doubles and three triples.

“Usually it takes time to work on those skills and pitchers aren’t good hitters,” South coach Kathy Ballew said. “She takes the time and understands the strike zone. She wants to be the one who is called on to get the big hit.”

C – Caitlin McCormick, junior, Bainbridge: McCormick averaged .438 with six doubles, two triples and a home run in her first season as starting catcher. The junior slugged .600 and finished the season with a perfect fielding percentage.

1B – Taylor Greenfield, sophomore, Bainbridge: As one of three freshman on the 2009 state championship team, Greenfield averaged .396 and slugged .469 with four doubles and a team-best 33 RBI this season. Greenfield also dominated on defense with a .987 fielding percentage.

2B – Hailey Willmann, sophomore, Bainbridge: The two-year letter winner led the Spartans with a team-high .481 batting average and 50 hits. Willmann had nine doubles and 24 RBI while slugging .587. She finished the season fielding .930. On the mound, Willmann went 5-0 giving up only two hits – and no runs – in 26 innings.

3B – Jenna Bartlett, junior, Central Kitsap: The power hitter led Central Kitsap in home runs as well as RBI, finishing with six and 18, respectively. She also hit .393, anchoring the middle of the batting order.

SS – Meagan Ransier, junior, South Kitsap: Ransier’s versatility showed this year when she moved from behind the plate to the infield and served as the Wolves’ lead-off hitter. She finished with a team-high .424 batting average, including a .739 on-base percentage, and had six doubles, one triple, one home run and 12 RBI. Ransier also had a team-best eight stolen bases.

“She can play anywhere,” Ballew said. “You can move her around and we wouldn’t drop a level at all.

OF — Kari Fetters, sophomore, Central Kitsap: Fetters finished with a team-high .509 batting average, adding 13 RBI, and also was one of the better defensive players in the area. In one game during the regular season, she recorded two outfield assists.

OF – Erin Kinney, freshman, Bainbridge: As the Spartans’ most dominant freshman, Kinney led with a team-best .640 slugging percentage, and averaged .427 with seven doubles, three triples and 28 RBI.

OF – Clara Dunn, junior, Bainbridge: The Spartans’ lead-off hitter batted .330 with a .414 on-base percentage. She hit 20 RBI, with five doubles and two singles.

UTIL — Greta Coleman, sophomore, Kingston: Coleman was a formidable force at the plate for the Buccaneers. She led her team in nearly every offensive category, with a .581 batting average, 38 RBI, a .603 on-base percentage and a 1.065 slugging percentage. She also had seven doubles, four triples and five home runs.

UTIL — Morgan Euzarraga, junior, Klahowya: Although Euzarraga primarily was a shortstop this season, she has the ability to play just about anywhere on the field. She was the team’s leading run-producer, with 28 RBI, and hit .429 to go with a slugging percentage of .686.

Coach of the year – Liz McCloskey, Bainbridge: In her sixth year as coach, McCloskey led the Spartans to their fourth consecutive state tournament appearance and second straight Class 3A title game. The Spartans, who won the 2009 state championship, won three games in seven hours to advance to the 2010 final.
