Plans are in the works for South Kitsap’s football team to wear a couple of decals on their maroon helmets this season.

Coach Eric Canton said he wants to honor both Elton Goodwin and Josh Osborn.

Goodwin died Nov. 7 from complications resulting from hip surgery earlier in the week. He was 63 years old.

While many remember Goodwin for his contributions to the Wolves’ baseball program, which he guided to a 491-136 record and three state championships from 1976 to 2003, he also played football at South, where he graduated in 1969.

Canton, a 1986 South graduate, played baseball for Goodwin. He said the team could not honor Goodwin last season because their final game was Nov. 8 against Foss at Mount Tahoma. This season, Canton said the team will don an “EG” sticker on their helmets.

He plans to honor Josh Osborn in a similar fashion. Osborn, 17, fell July 4 into the Ohanapecosh River near the Mount Rainier National Park entrance in Lewis County. Osborn’s body was located by kayakers who were navigating the river on July 27 and it was found downstream from where he fell in, according to Chief Deputy Stacy Brown, spokesperson for the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

Osborn played for South’s football team last year as a sophomore. A wide receiver, Osborn caught one pass for 7 yards last season. Canton said he remembered that moment during the Wolves’ 40-7 win Oct. 11 against Yelm.

“He dropped the first one,” Canton said. “We decided to come back to him and he made a great catch.”

In addition to the helmet sticker, Canton said he wants to honor Osborn in some fashion on the “Wolf Cards” sold by the team.

“He was just top-notch,” he said. “He always had a smile on his face and he always was working hard. He was one of those kids that if he made a mistake you only had to correct him once and it was done. He didn’t make the same mistake twice.

“He was one of those kids you love. He made it easy.”
