GIG HARBOR — It is a feeling that never gets old.

That is how South Kitsap senior guard Ali Davis describes beating rival Gig Harbor.

The Wolves accomplished that again Wednesday night with a 54-38 win against the Tides to remain undefeated in Class 4A Narrows League play.

“I really enjoy playing Gig Harbor,” said Davis, who had 13 points. “I just wanted to come in with a winning attitude and play confident.”

No current South player has ever lost against the Tides. The Wolves (10-2 overall, 6-0 league) now have defeated their rival five consecutive times. Gig Harbor’s last win in the series, 64-50, came on Feb. 3, 2009.

The Tides (4-8, 1-5) feature just one senior, guard Leah Davis, who scored a team-high 14 points, and that inexperience showed at times. Gig Harbor committed 31 turnovers.

Some of that also was a result of the Wolves’ defense.

“We’ve been working on our half-court trap and it was pretty effective,” said coach Mike Hulet, adding that his team still is adjusting to the scheme and missed some assignments.

But the Wolves often were unable to take advantage of that. Davis converted 5 of 8 shots, but her teammates shot just 28 percent from the field. Davis and senior wing Taylor Sunkel (16) were the only South players to score in double figures.

“I think we had a little bit of a letdown and that’s natural after the big week we had,” Hulet said.

Davis agreed.

“I think we played a little bit lackadaisical,” she said.

South, which now has a three-game winning streak, took sole possession of first place when it won 36-33 on Jan. 4 at Bellarmine Prep and followed that with a 51-26 victory Friday against Central Kitsap.

“We talked about being complacent and falling into that trap,” Hulet said. “It only takes one hiccup and you’re back into that (standings) mash.”

The Wolves, who have played five of their last six games on the road, now have three consecutive home contests.

“We’ve been the road warriors,” Hulet said. “We’re looking forward to a nice stretch at home.”

That begins at 7 tonight against Mount Tahoma.

“They’re athletic and physical,” Hulet said. “We will have to bring it.”

That game will close out the first half of league play for South, which has put itself in position to better last season’s 20-6 record. That was the program’s best mark in a decade.

“We’re extremely pleased with where we are right now,” Hulet said. “If we were to script it, this would be the best-case scenario.”
