The greatest concern of the offseason seems to be a nonissue now.
South Kitsap again had no issue scoring goals in a 5-1 victory Tuesday night against Bellarmine Prep in a Class 4A Narrows League match.
The Wolves (3-1-0 overall, 3-0-0 league) moved into sole possession of first place with the win. Since their season-opening 4-0 nonleague loss Sept. 9 at North Kitsap, they have scored nine goals.
“We changed our system after our first game,” South coach Julie Cain said. “We played North Kitsap and kind of got killed in the system we played last year, so we changed the system and since then it has been working.”
For competitive purposes, Cain declined to outline that adjustment.
“It’s not something I think anyone else in our league plays,” she said.
Cain resigned in June because she was expecting her third son — he was born in August — and only agreed to return for one more year shortly before the season began.
“I don’t think I prepared them well,” she said. “I would actually put it on myself. The first two weeks of the season are a complete fog in my mind. I just wasn’t getting any sleep and had a baby. It was hard to even think.”
Against NK, Cain said she was trying to figure out where her personnel was best suited. During the first half of league play last season, the Wolves scored 10 goals — half came in one contest at Yelm — and produced a 2-2-2 record. In the second half, they scored 14 goals and finished 4-2-0.
Cain expressed concern during the preseason that the Wolves might struggle to score again.
“We don’t have a lot of true forwards,” she said. “Even Rachael Prince, who we’re playing as our true forward, is an attacking center-midfielder on our club team. We’re just playing as a team and getting deep.”
Instead, South is relying on teamwork to find the net. In the Wolves’ first two league matches, at Olympia and Timberline, four different players scored. Against the Lions (3-2-0, 2-1-0), four players scored.
“Kind of my favorite thing in our first two games is how many different people are scoring,” Cain said. “I think that makes us hard to defend because we’re scoring from all over the place.”
Bellarmine took the lead in the 22nd minute when sophomore forward Elena Maes became the first player to score on senior goalkeeper Elisa Randel since NK.
“She’s playing great right now,” Cain said. “That first goal was really because it’s so wet. It just skipped.”
The Wolves had several scoring opportunities during the first half, but only senior midfielder Adri Jackson was able to get a shot past goalkeeper Madison Covell.
“I thought our set pieces were on fire in the first half and nothing went in,” Cain said. “It does get unlucky that way, but that’s the game of soccer.”
That changed during the second half as midfielders Ari de la Cruz (49th, 52nd), Hailey Parker (63rd) and Hayley Romo (68th) all scored. Parker said she felt it was important that no one was discouraged at halftime about several missed opportunities during the first 40 minutes.
“We’ve been really stressing on no regrets,” she said. “We’ll get it back.”
Even with the conditions, which ranged from drizzle to downpour, Parker said her teammates were excited for their home opener.
“It being the first game of our senior year was a pretty big, emotional deal,” she said. “Knowing that we came out with such good intensity made it even more enjoyable.”
The Wolves, who never defeated Bellarmine before 2008, now have beaten the Lions at least once in each of the last seven seasons. Cain is 6-3-1 against them in six years at South.
“It feels fantastic,” Parker said. “I feel like everyone will be more intense and want to win more since we’re on top already.”
