TACOMA — Alexandra Lanzafame was nervous prior to competing at the 2A state track and field competition that began May 24. Actually, she was super, super nervous, the North Kitsap High School junior long- and triple-jumper said. She couldn’t stop thinking about it.
It didn’t help that her first heat of the triple jump during prelims was a scratch.
Those nerves, and butterflies in her stomach, may have helped her out, however. By the time it came to the finals, Lanzafame needed one heat in the finals to land first place in the triple jump, earning her team 10 points and breaking a state record.
She also took first in the long jump, after saving energy by only competing in one heat in the triple finals.
“I was so happy I made those two 10-point wins,” she said. The two wins were also school records.
The two wins were part of a team effort by the North Kitsap girls track and field team at State — an effort that earned them the 2A state team title May 26.
“They’re amazing,” coach Cristi Frank said of the team. “We set goals and they accomplished them.”
The title is the third first-place title a team has earned at the high school. North Kitsap finished with 69 points. Sehome finished second with 67.
Lanzafame’s state meet record for the triple jump 38-09.25. Her long jump was 18-04.75.
Reagan Colyer, a West Sound Academy student who runs for NK, finished first in the 100-meter hurdles (15.54 seconds) and 300-meter hurdles (43.97). Colyer defeated Pullman’s Lauren McCluskey (15.68) in the 100 hurdles and Sehome’s Hanna Tarleton (44.92) in the 300 hurdles.
Lexi Simmons finished sixth in the discus, 113-05, and seventh in shot put, 34-11.75.
Hannah Snyder finished fourth in the triple jump, 35-01.47.
Indigo Williams finished fifth in the 200-meter run, 25.96; and sixth in the 100-meter, 12.76.
The 4×100 Relay team (Colyer, Williams, Kamina Flemming, Lanzafame), placed second (48.55). The team finished just behind Bellingham’s team (Holly Schrock, Alyssa Porter, Mary Dyrland, Chantal Tran), who crossed the finish line in 48.33.
The 4×200 team (Annika Lee Krol, Mekdes Crowley, Krisin Brown, Snyder), finished fifth (1:44.95).
At first, the athletes thought they might not take the title. The girls track and field team didn’t quiet have the 2A State title in the bag, that is until the Blaine High School 4×400 relay team defeated Sehome. Sehome’s points dropped enough for North to take first place outright.
Watching the 4×400 finals, seeing Blaine taking first, was an exciting moment.
“It all just came together in the end,” Lanzafame said.
Throughout the entire meet, team scores were being announced. Every time someone was up to compete, they knew they had to do their best.
“Our whole team stepped up and had a good, solid weekend,” Williams said.
Williams’s season was hindered in the middle of the season by a hamstring injury. Because she plans to run track in college and didn’t want to end her last sports season injured, she made sure to be healthy for State. She was able to pull through and come back, running the 100, 200 and 4×100 relay.
“I placed, so I can’t complain,” Williams said. “I wanted to help my team out as much as I could.”
After the team’s win, “Everyone was a little shocked at first,” she said.
Along with Lanzafame’s record-breaking performance, Lexi Simmons’s appearance in the shot put and Hannah Snyder’s appearance in the triple jump came as a surprise. Initially, both were thought to be out of State for those competitions because they did not seed high enough at Districts. The two ended up placing in the top 10.
The key to the team’s success has been their health and dedication to practices, coach Frank said. The team has hard workouts, which everyone sticks with.
Frank admits next year will be difficult, as the team is losing so many seniors. Seniors who have become team leaders. With a few state competitors, such as Colyer, Lanzafame and Snyder returning, however, she hopes to continue some of the success.
