Dalton Hurd hit a walk-off base hit on August 3 as the Bend Elks took the series opener by a score of 2-1 at Vince Genna Stadium, clinching the South Division in the process.
With the score tied at 1-1, BlueJackets reliever Holden Capps (0-2) issued a four pitch walk to Patrick Flynn with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Cooper Hummel then hit a grounder to Kitsap second baseman Patrick Chung which appeared to be a potential inning-ending double play ball, but the ball went between his legs, putting runners on the corners with just one out.
Capps then battled his way to a strikeout of JD Larimer before Hurd finished things off with his single that landed right in front of a diving Caylen Clardy.
The hard-luck loss spoiled a dominant start from Eli Fultz. The Olympic College lefty didn’t allow a hit until the seventh inning, finishing the night going seven strong, allowing one run on four hits and four walks, striking out two.
Kitsap got the scoring started in the third inning on a Kyle Nobach sacrifice fly to score Chung, who had doubled to lead the inning off.
Bend tied things up with a Hummel RBI groundout to the right side of the infield to plate West Tunnell.
Game two of the series takes place on August 4 at 6:35 p.m. All the action can be heard live on BlueJackets Radio with Sven Alskog on the call.
