The King’s West boys soccer team is positioned for a nice postseason run, sitting just behind Bear Creek and Tacoma Baptist for third place in the SeaTac 2B League standings.
The top three league finishers advance to districts where bids to state are on the line.
Junior keeper Nick Olson shut out Rainier Christian on Tuesday to help the Warriors (6-3-0 overall, 3-3-0 league) to a 1-0 victory. The shutout was the latest in a series of lock-down performances by Olson, who is second in the SeaTac League with 29 total saves and three shutouts.
“Nick Olson has had a great season this year and continues to impress the coaching staff,” coach Jason Meeder said.
Andy Lee scored his ninth goal of the year and the game’s only goal, assisted by Josh Damon in the 32nd minute.
Meeder, in his eighth season as KW boys soccer coach, said he believes the Warriors are good enough to finish at or near the top of the SeaTac League and make it to the state playoffs. And with six games remaining, including three against teams ahead of them in the standings, the Warriors are in prime position to make a move.
“The team has some major challenges coming up starting next week,” Meeder said, referring to an Oct. 14 game against Tacoma Baptist. “The guys have the skills and drive to win these next six games and get into the top three.”
Sophomore midfielder Josh Kriefels is second on the team with seven goals, while Lee’s nine are good for first.
“The team has been playing well together and continues to learn that teamwork is extremely important,” Meeder said. “I know the team is still struggling with some errors they have made in earlier games. But they have learned from their mistakes and I still believe this is the team that can make it to the state playoffs.”
The Warriors hosted Mount Rainier Lutheran on Thursday, but results from that game were unavailable at press time. The Oct. 14 Baptist game is on the road, beginning at 4 p.m.
The Warrior runners continued a successful season last Saturday at the King’s West Invite at Erlands Pt. Park.
Junior Carlie Rouse earned her fourth first-place finish of the season, winning the girls 5K with a time of 19 minutes, 20 seconds. Molly Wheeler finished a close third on a 19:55 run, her best time on the season.
Rouse and Wheeler’s times secured second place for the KW girls, which finished with 29 points. Vashon Island took first in girls action with 26 points, though their top finisher, Savannah Krug (20:02), finished only fourth in the 5K.
Faith Hamilton (24:41), Megan Barros (26:55) and Brenna Myers (27:59) placed 13th, 15th and 16th, respectively.
The boys finished in third place with 71 points, behind second-place Mount Rainier Lutheran (53 points) and winner Klahowya (45 points).
Sophomore Kelvin Mason posted the top KW boys time, a 17:36 ninth-place run. Senior Kyle Whitt finished 12th (17:46), while fellow senior Jarrod Coley took 14th (18:00).
KW traveled to Tacoma Baptist on Thursday for the SeaTac league meet, but results were unavailable at press time.
Rainier Christian swept the KW volleyball team 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-18) on Thursday behind 15 kills from Mariah McHolland.
The Warriors did, however, manage a victory Oct. 2 at home against Seattle Lutheran. KW came back from a 21-16 deficit in the second game and a seven-point deficit in the third game to win both and eventually take the match 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-18).
The Warriors faced Bear CREEK on Thursday and Evergreen Lutheran on Friday, but results from both matches were unavailable at press time.
