Kingston basketball teams remain on top

KINGSTON — The Kingston Buccaneer basketball teams continue to hold their dominant place at the top of the Olympic League. With just a few games left in the regular season, both the boys and girls teams have a solid shot at the title. However, a title won’t be taken easily.

The girls, holding a 10-2 league record, are one game ahead of the Bremerton Knights (9-2) after a 48-45 loss Jan. 27. Port Angeles (9-3) is on the heels of Bremerton. A combinations of losses by Kingston and wins from either Port Angeles or Bremerton could jeopardize a title shot. The girls have four games left, including home games against Klahowya Jan. 31; away game at North Mason Feb. 1; Sequim Feb. 3 and a rivalry game at North Kitsap Feb. 7.

The girls already defeated the three teams they are scheduled to face as the season comes to a close. The Bucs won 59-34 over Klahowya Dec. 20, 60-42 over Sequim Jan. 3 and 57-37 over North Kitsap Jan. 13.

Though the girls’ loss to Bremerton reduced the buffer zone between the Bucs and the rest of the League, the players continue to hold their own on the court. According to a recent statistics update, Maggie Snaza currently leads the Bucs with 12.3 points per game. Amanda Carper averages 9.9 points per game. Lindsey Wicklein makes 8.4 per game. And Samantha Salis makes 5.8. For assists, Carper leads with 2.8 per game with Napua Fontes, Wicklein and Katelyn Carper holding averages with 2.5 per game.

On defense Snaza leads in blocks with a .5 average and rebounds with an average of 9.8. Napua Fontes averages the most steals with 2.6 per game.
