Kingston runners fly on Fourth of July

Twelve runners set new age group records as 182 runners competed in the second annual Kingston Fun Run on the Fourth of July, which made it a great success, according to Dave Roberts of the host Kingston Running Club.

The number of participants this year represented more than a 50 percent increase over last year’s participation.

Kingston High School graduate Justin Doud repeated as men’s champion, breaking his own race record by covering the five-kilometer course in a time of 17:06. Marina Roberts, a sophomore at Kingston High School, dethroned her sister, Ruby, as women’s champion with a time of 20:42. Ruby still owns the women’s race record of 19:16 from last year.

Several runners set age group records as well, including Shelby Sundquist (31:02 – female 11 and under); Wade Doty (19:32 – male 12-14); Tricia Wardell (21:25 – female 20-29); Brian Wardell (18:14 – male 20-29); John Straub (21:12 – male 30-39); Debbie Wienmann (23:29 – female 40-49); Matthew Copus (20:11 – male 40-49); Teresa Barron (27:40 – female 50-59); Louie Pratt (19:33 – male 50-59); Diane Kina (32:10 – female 60-69); Bill Powers (26:44 – male 60-69); and Jerry Dietrich (30:20 – male 70+).

More than 20 generous Kingston merchants donated more than 40 prizes that were given out in a post-race drawing. Poulsbo Running, Kingston Fitness, The Cup & Muffin, The Ogden Group, Beebe, Roberts & Bryan, the Port of Kingston, Kingston 4th of July Celebration, and Kingston Chamber of Commerce sponsored the race.

Net proceeds from the Fun Run benefit the cross country teams of Kingston and North Kitsap High Schools to allow them to travel to regional and, possibly, national meets.

Kingston Running Club thanks the sponsors, all prize donors, and the numerous volunteers, including Kingston High School Coaches Coffman and Laubach. The event would not have happened without them, said Roberts.
