Kingston High senior Elle Sander placed eighth at the Class 2A girls state golf tournament Wednesday in Yakima. Sander shot an 81 on Tuesday, in the first round of play at Apple Tree Golf Course, and an 80 in the second round on Wednesday.
“I had a great time,” Sander said of the tournament. “I had spent the entire weekend practicing and I think all the work I had done throughout the season culminated right there.”
Sander’s teammate, Sam Fox, finished 74th in the boys tournament after the first round of play, also at Apple Tree. He did not qualify for the second round.
This is the second year Sander has competed at the state tournament. Last year, her score in the first round of play was not low enough to qualify her for the final round. This year, Sander said she was more familiar with the course and her skills were honed.
“Last year was my first really competitive situation,” she said. “I spent the year really improving my game.”
