Kingston’s Nitchman selected as league MVP | Boys soccer

KINGSTON — The Olympic League boys soccer MVP didn’t score a plethora of goals. He didn’t accumulate many assists, either. What Kingston’s Tommy Nitchman did was defend.

Nitchman, a team captain, helped keep the total goals against the Kingston Buccaneers to a single digit — nine.

“Tommy not only kept the shots on goal low by his play, he led his teammates as captain and leader in the back, communication and maintaining shape defensively,” Kingston coach Craig Smith wrote to the Herald. “That’s why we were so successful … and why we made it to the state quarterfinals.”

The Bucs allowed nine goals against in 21 games. Of those goals, two were own goals. The North Kitsap Vikings were the only team to score more than one goal against the Bucs in a single game.

Nitchman also earned three assists and a goal while playing center-fullback.

The Bucs’ season ended with a 18-3 record. The team’s state run was stopped with a 1-0 loss to Capital May 23.

Nitchman is joined on the all-league first team list by fellow Buccaneers defender Alex Hernandez, goalkeeper Alex Worland, and forward Alex Newton.

Kingston defender Moises Larios, goalkeeper Kyle Van Wyck, and forward Jovi Hernandez made the second team list.
