Kitsap All-Stars have one last shot for World Series win

The 13-year-old Babe Ruth League World Series host team lost its third consecutive game against Westfield, Mass. Aug. 17.

BREMERTON — For the first time in 20 years, a Westfield, Mass., Babe Ruth team won a game in a World Series. Unfortunately for the Kitsap County All-Stars, that Westfield win meant Kitsap’s third loss in a row.

The 12th game of the 13-year-old Babe Ruth League World Series ended Aug. 17 with an 8-6 Westfield win.

“It’s a big deal in our town,” Westfield manager Mike Smith said. “I was happy we delivered a victory.”

The loss puts Kitsap at 0-3 in the pool play portion of the tournament. Westfield is 1-2.

Kitsap’s Hayden Trull scored in the top of the first to get the game rolling. From the dugout it was all excitement: “That’s the way we want to start,” a voice yelled out into the field.

But Westfield answered back in the first and second innings with six runs of its own.

In the top of the third, Kitsap was setup to drive in at least two. Westfield player Matt Hastings made a double play at second that ended Kitsap’s shot at an early comeback. This is Hastings first world series and it was his first double play.

“It was just excitement,” he said after the game. “Getting the guy out, was just excitement … It was great.”

And while Westfield was up on runs, it was also up on errors — five to Kitsap’s three.

Westfield and Kitsap both earned a run in the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth, Kitsap earned two. The host team was making a quick return. At least until Westfield’s Ari Schwartz took the mound. Schwartz pitched a scoreless seventh for his team, striking out two.

The win was the first for Westfield since a 15-year-old team won in a world series in 1992.

Kitsap has one more shot at a win in the world series when they face Meridian, Idaho. Meridian is coming off a 8-7 loss to Waite Park, Minn.
