Nick Stiltner pitched a three-hit, complete-game shutout to lead the Bend Elks past the Kitsap BlueJackets 1-0 in front of an announced crowd of 472 at Lobe Fields at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds Monday.
Stiltner struck out six batters and walked one to outlast Jackets starter Brad Propst, who allowed just one run on three hits in eight innings while striking out eight and walking one.
Jordan Leyland’s two-out RBI single to left field in the top of the sixth inning to score Jordan Hadlock, who doubled to lead off the inning, proved the game’s only run.
The Jackets had runners on first and third with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, but Stiltner struck out the next three batters to escape the jam.
Then with runners on first and second with one out in the ninth, Central Kitsap grad Caleb Brown fouled out and Doug Buser struck out to end the Jackets’ comeback bid and the game.
With the loss, the Jackets dropped to 16-22 overall and 13 1/2 games behind the first-place Corvallis Knights (29-8). Bend, who trails Corvallis by eight games, improved to 21-16 and 6-4 against the Jackets.
The second of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at the Fairgrounds.
