Knights beat Bucs to end regular season

Bremerton and Kingston battled in their last regular-season match Oct. 18, and although the Knights won 6-1 a few matches came down to the wire.

The two teams next advance to the postseason Oct. 20-21 for the Olympic League championships at North Kitsap High School.

The top two doubles matches came down to tiebreakers.

Bremerton’s Tyler Kealona and Bobby Ungren easily blanked Bucs Aiden Mattson and Riley Leibold by winning the first set 6-0. Kealona and Ungren then took a 3-2 lead in the second set. However, the two teams continued to split the matches until Bremerton led 5-4. Mattson and Leibold rallied for three straight games to win 7-5. Then Kingston jumped into a 5-2 lead in the final set. But Kealona and Ungren pulled off the comeback by winning 7-6, 7-1 in a tiebreaker.

At No. 2 doubles, Bucs Sean Kirkpatrick and Ben Decker won the second set 6-3 after dropping the first against Knights Keaton Martinez and Evan Burnette. The two went to a tiebreaker, won by Kingston’s Kirkpatrick and Decker 7-2.

Bremerton easily won the other matches.

Bremerton ace Joseph Cao faced Kingston’s Josh Van Huis in the first singles match. The players split the first two games in the first set. However, Cao took over and won every game from there, 6-1 and 6-0. Bremerton’s Asher Steinbach swept Ryan Steele 6-0, 6-0 in the second singles match. Bremerton completed the singles sweep when Knight Eli Warner won 6-2, 6-0 against Kingston’s Joey Munns.

Knights Jomarr Montemayor and Jeremy Madbugbayan defeated Bucs’ Alex Markaryan and Paul Fitch at No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-0. Lastly, Knights Steve McIntyre and Alex Rempfer defeated Bucs Rowe McNamara and KC Black 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 doubles.
