Twenty-seven shots on goal and 12 corners.

In soccer terms, that generally translates to an easy win.

But South Kitsap’s boys team couldn’t find its way past Lincoln goalkeeper Jose Talavera, and Tuesday night’s match ended 0-0.

“They were doing a lot of crossing it in and I was just standing up,” said Talavera, who earned his second shutout of the season. “If I stayed down, they would’ve got me.”

The Wolves (7-0-1 overall, 6-0-1 league) fell into third place behind Bellarmine Prep and Stadium in the Narrows League with the tie. Senior Brent Ricigliano, who scored in the sixth minute during Monday’s 4-0 win against Foss, blamed his team’s problems on a lack of focus.

“I feel that we really underestimated them,” said Ricigliano, who plans to play next year at Peninsula College in Port Angeles. “We can’t have mental letdowns.”

The Abes (1-3-2, 1-3-2) didn’t have a shot on goal. It seemed that the only time they were able to advance the ball into South territory came when Talavera punted it after a save. But even with several one-on-one situations, the Wolves always seemed to kick it toward Talavera or wide of the goal.

“We were too excited,” Ricigliano said. “We were thinking about it too much — hitting the ball instead of placing the ball.”

South hadn’t scored less than two goals in a match this season, but coach Michael Krug wasn’t concerned about the lack of output.

“We knocked the ball around beautifully short of technically in the attacking third,” he said. “The ball’s round, there’s 22 of them, and they’re 17 years old. Anything can happen.”

But with a 2 p.m. Saturday match against Bellarmine Prep — a team that beat the Wolves for the Narrows League championship in both the regular season and playoffs last season — and undefeated Stadium next week, Krug feels the tie should be a motivator for his team.

“To be completely honest, it was the best thing that could’ve happened to us,” he said. “At times they’ve been a little too confident. This will allow the boys to get refocused. They’ll remember this.”

Ricigliano said he had no doubt that will happen.

“A tie is a loss to us,” he said. “That’s unacceptable. We’re not going to let this happen again.”
