BREMERTON — Lincoln Monroe finished 12th in the junior division at the 2017 Pokémon World Championships, Aug. 18-20 in Anaheim, California, after a weekend of competition against top Pokémon players from more than 40 countries.

Lincoln won his choice of a scholarship or travel certificate. More than $500,000 in scholarships and prizes were awarded at the event.

Lincoln qualified for the world championships by surviving a gauntlet of local, regional, and international tournaments in the year-long Pokémon Championship Series. While more than 450,000 Pokémon players participate in the series throughout the year, only 700 players competed in the invitation-only 13th annual Pokémon World Championships event, with even fewer earning a top position.

“Each year, the Pokémon World Championships bring the global Pokémon community together to compete, celebrate, and enjoy the games that have delighted fans for two decades,” J.C. Smith of The Pokémon Company International said in an announcement of the results. “Congratulations to our new Pokémon world champions, and a special thank you to the community of players, family members, volunteers, and fans who once again made the Pokémon World Championships the premier Pokémon event of the year.”

More than 3,500 players, fans, and supporters attended the event at the Anaheim Convention Center, while more than 1.5 million Pokémon fans watched the action from home via live stream.
