Mike Ramos goal lifts Kitsap Pumas over Portland Timbers U23

Hamza Haddadi equalizes in first half after early Timbers goal, before Ramos led the Pumas to a win, 2-1.

SALEM, Ore. — Despite conceding a fifth-minute goal to the Portland Timbers U23, the Kitsap Pumas scored twice to reverse the deficit and win, 2-1. Forward Hamza Haddadi equalized in the 11th minute, and Mike Ramos scored a minute into the second half to give the game its final score.

Timbers forward Timmy Mueller put away his team’s first chance of the game, after Portland worked the ball down its right side and crossed into the middle. However, the lead would only last six minutes.

Pumas playmaker Jesús Sánchez slotted a ball through the Portland back line for Haddadi to run onto and finish, bringing the game back to Square One. From then, Kitsap continued to pressure until halftime but couldn’t find a second goal.

It didn’t take long to find one in the second half, though.

Ian Lange played a free kick over the top and found Ramos at the back post. The lanky forward slalomed past his defender and tucked the ball inside the far post in the 46th minute.

The match closed with the Timbers pressing for an equalizer of their own, but Kitsap stood firm in front of goalkeeper Arturo Oberto, making his first professional start.

With the win, the Pumas move to 2-3-2 on the league season, amassing five points. The PDL club now takes on MLS franchise Seattle Sounders in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, on Wednesday at Starfire Stadium.

The Kitsap Pumas enter their eighth season in the Premier Development League in 2016 after winning the Northwest Division for the fourth time in 2015. The Pumas won the PDL national championship in 2011 and advanced to the national final again in 2014, establishing themselves as a reputable professional club with a proven record of moving players onto the next level in the process. Kitsap plays its home matches at Gordon Field, an intimate 1,500-capacity stadium on the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton, Wash.
