LAKEWOOD — When it comes to the Central Kitsap cross-country program, it starts with the Moskowitz twins.
That again was the case during Wednesday’s 5-kilometer Narrows League cross-country championships at Fort Steilacoom Park when junior Shane Moskowitz won the boys race in 15 minutes, 25.54 seconds. He outlasted Gig Harbor’s Conner Peloquin (15:36.36) and Wilson’s Kevin Rosaaen (15:38.98).
“I was debating on staying with Kevin because he always goes out really hard,” Moskowitz said. “Conner went with Kevin, so I decided to go with him.”
Rosaaen had the lead after the first lap, but the race remained close until near the end. Moskowitz said he felt good throughout the race, and after competing there last season and in last week’s meet along with Bellarmine Prep, Central Kitsap, Shelton and South Kitsap, he had a plan.
“I already had in my head that I was going to take off down the last hill,” he said. “I do pretty good downhill, I guess.”
Moskowitz, who finished with a personal-best time, said he’s been able to avoid getting sick. His sister, Shannon, has battled bronchitis for a couple of weeks.
“I’ve just stayed away from her,” he said, laughing. “She’s been running great with it, so I’m proud of her.”
The top 30 finishers qualified for Nov. 1 districts at American Lake Veterans Golf Course in Lakewood. Joining Moskowitz for the Cougars are Zackery Weber (16:36.97, seventh place), Michael Thorsen (16:59.14, 10th), John Mackovjak (17:22.44, 21st) and Mark Siesta (17:30.78, 25th). That helped CK finished second with 64 points behind Gig Harbor (37).
“I’m really proud of them,” CK coach John Emery said. “They work together and that’s what counts.”
He said the same applies to the girls team, which also qualified for districts because it finished in the top six. The Cougars placed fourth with 93 points behind Gig Harbor (39), Olympia (78) and Bellarmine Prep (79).
Despite her illness, Moskowitz finished second (18:47.13) behind Olympia junior Clare Kane (18:32.95). She said she was about 15 seconds slower than her expectations.
“I wanted to quit so bad during the first mile because I just didn’t feel very good,” Moskowitz said. “But I had to push through it because it’s leagues and I want to help my team out.”
CK had two top-10 placers when Tori Johansen, an exchange student from Norway, placed eighth in 19:51.51.
“We got her in August and she wanted to try cross country,” Emery said. “What more can you ask for?”
A third runner, Gee Mi Jorde, also qualified for the Cougars. She finished 16th in 20:40.31.
“It was a very good performance for the boys and girls,” Emery said. “They pushed themselves hard. I can’t complain at all. They were good.”
