North Kitsap’s baseball team won over 20 games and only lost a few.
So its season-ending loss last week in Tacoma knocking them out of the state tournament was especially hard to take.
The Vikings were seeded No. 1 in the state in 2A.
But they were shocked in the first round of the regional 2A state tournament.
They fell to White River 5-1 at Foss High School in Tacoma.
What was especially stunning was that the winners were seeded 16th in the tourney.
It was also disheartening as White River then lost in the quarterfinals anyway, 7-6 to W.F. West.
Advancing to state in Yakima are the other three top four teams of Columbia River, Ellensburg and Tumwater.
Bainbridge didn’t do any better in the 3A tournament.
The fifth-seeded Spartans were stunned by 12th seeded Mercer Island 8-0 Saturday in Auburn.
Mercer Island then shocked host Auburn, seeded fourth, to advance to the state semifinals Saturday in Pasco, where they will face top-ranked West Seattle. The others in the top four are Kennewick and Mount Spokane.
