North Kitsap and Port Angeles were not scheduled to face each other to end the regular season, but since they tied for first place in the Olympic League they had a playoff game to decide the league title and No. 1 seed to the district tournament.
They both had 12-2 records, but after NK’s 5-2 victory the Vikings are 13-2 and the Roughriders 12-3.
“It was huge because it’s one win and into state, and we get an easier opponent first round,” NK coach Jeff Weible said.
The Vikings put the pressure on the visitors from the start, scoring four runs in the first inning. Tate Stearns hit an RBI double. Jonathan Borque struck out but beat the throw to first, and Spencer Gillespie scored. After scoring by stealing home, Noah Sorenson hit an RBI single to end the inning.
“It was important to get some runs early on these guys and separate ourselves,” Weible said, adding he wasn’t as impressed with the squad as the game went on. “We struck out seven times looking so we need to do a better job with that.”
Luckily for the home team, Viking Dawsyn Anderson dominated on the mound. He allowed one walk and one base hit in the first four innings. Both of those runners were thrown out before reaching second base. He also struck out three.
“[Dawsyn] was dominant today,” Weible said. “He was throwing strikes and was around the plate and tough to hit. The defense played great behind him too with a couple of double plays.”
He did have a rough fifth inning, giving up a 2 RBI double. But NK responded when Alex Elton scored on a passed ball.
Marcus Kim stepped in for Anderson to earn the final out of the game.
