The North Kitsap wrestlers struggled to keep their heads up Wednesday in a 52-16 loss to Sequim.

Only one Viking, Daniel Jewett (160), earned an individual win against the tenacious Wolves squad.

“Sequim is pretty tough,” said NK coach Joe Amick. “They’ve got a lot of tough kids.”

Jewett outlasted Sequim’s Dalton Ackley for three rounds, garnering a 10-2 victory for the Vikings’ first points of the night.

North’s Riley McDonald was declared a winner in the 119-pound class by way of forfeit.

Of the remaining eight matches, North wrestlers were pinned in five.

“We’re still learning,” Amick said. “We’ve got a lot of new technique that’s still being put in.”

Some of that technique was on display in the 189-pound match, as Allan Dunlap of NK took on Sequim’s Ethan Hutchinson. With his shoulders nearly on the mat, Dunlap executed a difficult bridge — arching his pelvis upward and pushing off the mat with only his feet and the top of his head — to escape the pin.

Dunlap continued to fight hard, but ultimately lost by fall with two seconds left in the first round.

North’s Matt Moriarty also put up a fight in his 112-pound bout with Austin Middleton. Moriarty trailed for the first two rounds, but staged a comeback in the third, invigorating the crowd. In the end, though, Moriarty’s burst was not enough to overcome Middleton’s sizable lead.

The Vikings finished their season Thursday at Bainbridge Island.

Coach Amick summed up the year by calling it, “a lot of learning, and a lot of growing.”
