POULSBO — The North Kitsap High School boys swim team fell seven points short of grabbing a share of the Olympic League title Tuesday as they lost to Port Angeles, 95-88. Port Angeles maintained sole possession of the league title with the victory.

The Vikings began Tuesday’s meet with a record-setting win in the 200-yard medley relay. Swimmers Glenn Runnels, Kyle Eggers, Tyler Rencher and Josh Despard won by 15/100 of a second to set a new school record of 1 minute, 50.37 seconds. The previous record, of 1:53.26, was set in 2001.

Rencher also set a new school record in the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 56.76 seconds. Rencher had already broken Geoff Phoenix’s 1998 record of 58.34 seconds twice this season. His best time prior to Tuesday’s meet was 57.96 seconds, which he set Jan. 7 against Bremerton.

After the record-setting finish in the 200-yard medley relay Tuesday, the Vikings struggled to keep pace with the Roughriders. Port Angeles took the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle swim and the first and third place spots in the 200-yard individual medley to push into the lead.

Despard finished first in the 50-yard freestyle to bring North Kitsap back into contention. But the Vikings, who do not have divers, fell behind after Port Angeles gained 13 points in the one-meter dive event.

Despite strong efforts in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke, the Vikings could not overcome the deficit.
