NK boys and girls cross country teams set standard for 3A
Of 2,600 athletes from 87 teams around the region who competed in the 15 races at the 35th Sunfair Invite in Yakima over the weekend, the North Kitsap Vikings varsity girls team placed first for 3A schools and sixth overall, while the varsity boys team placed second for 3A and 16th overall. The race was run in seven combined boys and girls varsity flights, each a distance of three miles.

Today the Vikes travel to Bremerton and race against Port Angeles and Bremerton.
Kingston cross country
keeps running stong
Over the weekend the Buccaneers traveled to Yakima for the 35th Sunfair Invite, and performed well on the wet and slippery course, against 2,600 runners on 87 teams form around the region. The race was in seven combined boys and girls varsity flights, each a distance of three miles.
Varsity results: flight 1: 36th, Shane Hawthorn, 19:32.38; 44th, Madeline Kirstein, 25:37.44; flight 2: 60th, Nathan Ajax, 20:30.77; 38th, Megan Ramey, 23:30.05; flight 3: 53rd, Wade Doty, 19:21.47; 33rd, Chloe Stamper, 22:55.46; flight 4: 46th, Mitch Murdock, 18:42.33; flight 5: 40th, Austin Cherry, 18:04.66; eighth, Rose Bishop, 20:11.75; flight 6: 41st, Nick Schippers, 17:58.50, fourth, Marina Roberts, 19:14.94; and flight 7: 25th, Justin Doud, 16:50.04; and eighth, Ruby Roberts, 18:53.43. Roberts was one of 10 girls to finish the race in less than 19 minutes.
Today the Bucs host, North Mason and Klahowya in their first of two home meets. Race starts at 4 p.m. at the trails near Kingston High and Gordon Elementary.
Viking football wins
a close encounter
On Friday the Vikings traveled to Olympia to take on North Thurston and came away with the win 21-14, as Brad DeShano scored a 67-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
“The entire team is learning how to prepare both physically and mentally. That is an important factor as we move our way to the playoffs,” wrote head coach Steve Frease in an e-mail. “This Saturday’s game will help determine where the Vikings land in the playoff picture as we host a powerful Capital team.”

Buccaneer football takes
a hard loss in double overtime
On Friday the Bucs hosted Washington at the North Kitsap Stadium and lost in double overtime by a touchdown, 21-14.
“Our kids played with a lot of heart but came up just short,” head coach Dan Novick wrote in an e-mail. “Overall, we are making steady progress. Our tackling was still suspect, but we are bringing more guys to the ball, and we made some really positive plays that created opportunities for us.”
The defensive effort recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass and the special teams blocked a punt and recovered an onside kick.
Stats: Travis Schriner, 31 carries for 88 yards and one touchdown; Paul Bagala nine carries for 46 yards and one touchdown; Tucker Bowman one reception for seven yards; and Ian Brown, one reception for 16 yards.
On Friday it’s the Bucs homecoming celebration. The Bucs host Sequim at the NK Stadium, game starts at 7 p.m.
Kitsap youth lacrosse offers fall clinics
The third annual fall youth lacrosse clinic will be two clinics this year, at locations in South Kitsap and North Kitsap, and are open to boys and girls in grades three through eight. This Sunday the clinic will be at Marcus Whitman Junior High School, 1887 Madrona Dr SE, Port Orchard. Next Sunday Oct. 19, the clinic will be at Poulsbo Middle School, 2003 NE Hostmark St, Poulsbo. The clinics will be from 1-4 p.m., cost $10.

NKSC’s Chaos tops its division
Over the weekend GU-15 NK Chaos defeated HSC Blue Lightning, 3-1. Goals were scored by Lindsey Foster (penalty kick), Bryton Wildsmith assist by Liz Lawrence and by Rachel Fisk. Chaos has a 3-0-1 record, which places it in first place in the Gold Platinum Bracket of Division III (WSYSL). Chaos’s next game in Oct. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Kingston High School.
Tennis
Both Kingston (North Mason, Sequim) and North Kitsap High (Port Angeles) tennis matches were canceled due to rain.
