North Kitsap takes win over Kingston volleyball, soccer teams tie

KINGSTON — It was a night of rivalry sporting events at Kingston High School, as girls from the North Kitsap Vikings and Kingston Buccaneers went head-to-head.

The outcome: A league win for Vikings volleyball and a tie for the girls soccer teams.

The volleyball court (KHS gymnasium) was filled with a roaring crowd and two pumped up teams. Chanting from the North Kitsap junior varsity volleyball team continued through the evening, increasing the decibel level.

“It’s so much fun just having those crowds,” Viking varsity captain Nicole Weber said.

Viking captain Sarah Baugh agreed.

“It makes some of the freshman nervous, but I think it also gets our adrenaline going,” she said.

The Vikings volleyball team took the night 3-0 — 25-11, 25-23, 25-14. The Vikings are now 2-0 overall. Kingston is 1-1 overall.

The first match was relatively quick, but Baugh said the Vikings were on edge when the Bucs held the lead during the second match. The Vikings were late getting back in gear in the second match, as the Bucs came out at a higher level, Baugh said. Still down, the Vikings rallied for a two-point win.

“We got our mojo back,” Baugh said.

Though it looked as if the third match might be close as well, the Vikings pulled away, taking the win and enacting a Vikings chant from both the team and the crowd.

The Vikings may have kept the Bucs below 20 points twice Tuesday night, but Baugh said the team looks stronger overall. The Bucs hitting and defense was better and the setter has “good hands.”

“There are a lot of things that are different; they have a new coach and she is doing really well with them,” Baugh said. “They were good … They are a good team.”

On the other side of the KHS campus, the girls soccer teams were in full force.

The game ended 1-1. It was the first time the two teams have faced each other and tied.

Both teams defended well, keeping the ball closer to the center field than either goal. However, it was Vikings’s Lindsey Foster in the 22nd minute, breaking away and scoring the first goal of the night against Kingston goalie Sara Nash; kicking the ball above Nash’s head from outside.

The rest of the first half went scoreless.

Early in the second half the Bucs pace hastened. A goal by Bucs’ Kristi Mellum in the 47th minute on a free kick increase the team’s spirit even more, Kingston head coach Craig Smith said.

Save for the last play of the game — when Sara Nash stuffed the ball — the Bucs were able to hold the Vikings outside the goal area.

North Kitsap is now 1-2-0. Kingston is 0-1-1.
