North Kitsap High School wrestler Jake Velarde won the Cadet and Junior Regional Championship in Greco Roman wrestling March 28 in Battleground. Velarde, who competes in the 119-pound weight class, defeated defending national champion Hayden Tuma of Idaho to win the regional title. Velarde also placed second in the freestyle wrestling division at the regional tournament.

The tournament featured high school-age wrestlers from seven different states. Velarde and Klahowya’s Adam Burchett and Neil Sell will compete at the Cadet and Junior National Championships July 18-24 in Fargo, N.D.
