POULSBO — The North Kitsap kickers know how to dominate an opponent on the field.
In a non-league home game Saturday against Bremerton’s Olympic Trojans the Vikings controlled the ball 60 percent of the contest. The Vikes waxed Olympic in shots on goal, posting 13 to the Trojans 4.
When it was all over the Vikings strode off the field with a clean 3-2 victory.
“We created a lot of scoring opportunities and had a lot of chances, which is good,” said head coach Chris May. “They did a nice job, everybody seemed to be playing together.”
The Vikes led the charge and jumped to an early lead. Within the first 11 minutes of play, NK’s Greg Otelle assisted by Sam Mouser hit the bull’s eye and nabbed the Vikings first goal.
In order to keep racking up the goals, the Vikes threw a monkey wrench in the Trojans style of play.
Olympic likes to play fast, but the Vikes played a style of its own.
“Olympic tries to push the ball a lot more,” May said. “We were patient when moving the ball up the field and looked for opportunities.”
North’s patience strategy paid off.
At the 37 minute mark, the Vikings’ Ashy Carlsen — assisted by Jake Pedersen — nailed NK’s second goal. And before the Trojans could even get on the board, Mouser — assisted by Josh Lax — sunk the Vikings third goal.
With 10 minutes remaining and the game synched up in North’s favor, May started to play the bench. And pulling the starters was just enough to get Oly back in the contest. The Trojans pulled two goals against NK’s second team.
North traveled to Tacoma on Tuesday and took on Narrows League opponents the Stadium Tigers.
It was the Vikings first league game of the season. Results of the game were not available at presstime.
Heading into the contest May said it was going to be a challenge, as Stadium has a good program and a line up of very quick and skilled players.
“It will be a lot tougher game than we’ve had so far this year,” May said.
Tomorrow the Vikes return to Viking Stadium to play Mount Tahoma. The game starts at 7 p.m. On Saturday North travels to Kingston to take on former teammates the Buccaneers. The game starts at 1:45 p.m.
