There were scribbles and smiles as five area athletes signed letters-of-intent on national signing day Wednesday.

Olympic High School football player Blake Johnson, and Central Kitsap High School’s Shane Moskowitz (cross country), Shannon Moskowitz (cross country), Christian Wesley (football and basketball) and Hannah Anderson (soccer) signed on the dotted line to extend their playing careers into college.

Johnson, who grew up in Pueblo, Colo., will return to the place where he ground his gridiron teeth. He will play free safety for the Thunderwolves of Colorado State University-Pueblo, coached by John Wristen.

“I’m relieved the whole recruiting process is over,” Johnson said. “It was a roller coaster ride. I’m a little nervous, but excited too.”

The two-sport star — he also plays baseball — chose the Thunderwolves because he got along with the entire coaching staff and saw eye-to-eye with the players he met. He visited the campus in January and was sold right away.

“They buttered me up, for sure,” he said.

It was a busy day at Central Kitsap as the Moskowitz twins sat side by side to sign letters that will send them in different geographic directions.

Shane, the 2009 Class 4A state cross country champion, will head southeast to run at Oklahoma State University. Shannon, meanwhile, is headed to Boise State University.

Wesley signed with Central Washington University, and Anderson is bound for Oregon State University.
