The opportunities were there, but the hits didn’t come.
That was the case when the Olympic High School baseball team lost 3-0 on the road Wednesday, missing a chance to hand North Kitsap High School its first loss of the season.
Senior Riley Crow struck out eight batters, allowed four hits and pitched a complete game for the Trojans. The team left the bases loaded in the top-half of the seventh inning down three runs.
“He pitched very well,” Andrews said of Crow. “We just couldn’t get the hits when we needed to.”
Olympic (9-3 overall) produced twice as many hits as the Vikings, but base-running errors and a lack of clutch hitting ended each rally. Alex Smith earned the win for North Kitsap, which entered the game ranked No. 6 in the state.
Despite the loss, Andrews was happy with his team’s performance.
“They are a well-respected team, and we were right there with them,” he said. “We’re feeling pretty good with where we are.”
The Trojans remained in second place among Class 3A teams in the combined 3A/2A Olympic League, but their chances of winning a league title took a blow in the loss.
The team has four league games remaining, beginning with a home contest against North Mason High School at 4 p.m. Monday at Gene Lobe Field at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
“My goal all season has been to get us healthy and playing good baseball,” Andrews said. “We’re almost there, but not quite yet.”
