Area sprinters, hurdlers and throwers are fighting for spots to their respective district meets as the track and field postseason heats up.
Olympic kicked things off with a strong showing at the Olympic League championships at North Mason High School last weekend, sweeping first-, second- and third-place in the boys 100-meter race en route to a boys team championship.
Central Kitsap weathered rainy conditions at the first day of the Narrows League championships Wednesday led by perennial distance power Shane Moskowitz, who won the 3,200.
Rebecca Lindgren placed second in the 200 at the Olympic League meet to help the Lady Eagles to a seventh-place finish in the team standings.
The following is a recap of what highlighted a busy week on the track.
Central Kitsap
The Cougars splashed their way to mixed results Wednesday in the first day of competition at the two-day Narrows League track and field championships at South Kitsap High School.
With steady rain pelting the stadium before, throughout and after the meet, the CK boys managed 15 points to finish the day in sixth place. The girls, meanwhile, mustered 24 points to end the day third.
State shoe-in Shane Moskowitz continued his dominance in the distance to win the 3,200-meter race in 9 minutes, 15.62 seconds. Teammate Zackery Weber took sixth in the same event with a 9:55.38. Both earned spots to next week’s Class 4A West Central District meet at Mount Tahoma.
In the sprints, Josh DeVaughn was disqualified in the 100 due to a false start, meaning he won’t be eligible to race the event at districts. He rebounded from the DQ to take second in the 200, finishing second to Ron Baines of Mount Tahoma in 23.11.
DeVaughn, a first-year track and field competitor, owns the leagues fastest 100 time.
Rebekah Daniel qualified for districts in the long jump with a second-place finish, as did Bethani Braun in the discus with a second-place tally of her own. Brianna Haskell and Megan Denis qualified in the high jump.

Olympic (bold)
A trip to concessions was ample time to miss the Trojans sprint to a sweep of the boys 100 at the Olympic League championships.
Darrious Walker (11.33), Kyle King (11.45) and Larry Dixon (11.78) took first, second and third, respectively, to lead the Trojan boys to team title with 162 points, ahead of runner-up North Kitsap (148).
Walker barely missed first in the 200, getting out-leaned at the finish line by Jarell Flora of Bremerton to come up one-one hundredth of a second short with a time of 22.95 to Flora’s 22.94.
Teammate Aljohn Gaviola, a sophomore, won the 110 hurdles in 16.30, while the 4X100 relay team of Walker, Dixon, King and Travis Quinn captured first with a 44.30. Dixon also won the shot put.
Dixon also won the shot put and Richard Lumagui took the triple jump.
There were no first-place finishers for Oly on the girls side, but Lynna Rachelle Logue managed second in the shot put with a 31-foot-5-and-one-half-inch toss. The Lady Trojans finished sixth with 39 points, far behind winner North Kitsap (149).
Olympic is set to compete at sub-districts tomorrow at Port Angeles.
Klahowya (bold)
The Eagles had no individual titles at leagues, but Randy Schmittler grabbed third in the 300 hurdles (42.45) to help the boys team to a 27-point, eighth-place finish.
Lindgren led the girls with a second-place mark in the 200 (26.36).
