POULSBO — The North Kitsap kickers know how to dominate an opponent on the field.
In a non-league home game Saturday against Bremerton’s Olympic Trojans the Vikings controlled the ball 60 percent of the contest. The Vikes waxed Olympic in shots on goal, posting 13 to the Trojans 4.
KINGSTON — The Buccaneers soccer team kicked its season off with a message: We may be new, but we can play.
On Saturday in their season opener the Bucs played last year’s top 2A Olympic League school, Sequim High School, and didn’t let the Wolves get a bite.
Ambitions and determination aside, sometimes a sports season begins on a sour note.
And the Vikings baseball team opened its season on such a note.
With a horror story of walks and missed opportunities at the plate on Friday, the Vikes dropped its season opener against the Bainbridge Island Spartans, 7-6.
It’s tee-time for the joint North Kitsap High School and Kingston High School women’s golf team.
The team, comprised of 11 athletes, welcomes back letter winners sophomore Kyla Miedema and juniors Hayleigh Wuensch, Megan Mitchell, Lindsay Sheridan and Helen Wytko.
Bouncing back from a loss of players to Kingston High School and stiff Narrows League competition marks the beginning of the 2007-08 North Kitsap High boys soccer season.
But head coach Chris May and assistant coach Greg St. Peter are “optimistic” about the season, which will be headed by sound senior leadership and overall quality athletes.
At tryouts approximately 50 players showed up and 40 made the cut — 10 players are seniors.
POULSBO — The Poulsbo Middle Panthers added another win to its already flawless record, as it pounced McMurray Middle School of Vashon Island, 51-30.
Led by a strong defense, the young basketball team boosted its record to 3-0 on Thursday afternoon.

That’s how lady Buccaneers’ head basketball coach Kevin Strozier sums up the team’s season as it heads to the district tournament as one of the top three teams in Olympic League play.
TACOMA — Blythe Peterson did Kingston High proud in its first wrestling season out of the gate. The 145-pounder earned fifth place at the girl’s 4A Washington State Mat Classic XX Championship at the Tacoma Dome on Saturday.
TACOMA — The road most traveled this weekend ended with two North Kitsap/Kingston gymnasts placing in the state competition. The NKK “Vikaneers” wore a groove in the pavement between North Kitsap and the Tacoma Dome this weekend, driving back and forth for the WIAA state gymnastics championship.
TACOMA — The North Kitsap Vikings’ decisive 71-63 victory over Curtis High on Wednesday night left a single question on everybody’s minds. Where, exactly, did Jordan Coover come from? Coover played like a man on a mission, scoring 22 points to compliment Kyle Erickson’s 25. Coover’s been flying under the radar all season, but with his performance against Curtis, now everyone knows what he’s capable of.
POULSBO — It’s down to the last matches of the season, and Anthony Lindfors won’t be holding anything back. Lindfors and fellow senior Matt Cordell are representing the North Kitsap Vikings in the 4A Washington State Mat Classic XX Championships in the Tacoma Dome today.
The event started yesterday in double-elimination style matches. The results of those matches weren’t available at press time.
TACOMA — These boys are hungry and it’s almost dinnertime. After a disappointing 70-67 loss to Gig Harbor Friday night, the North Kitsap Vikings came back with a vengeance to defeat Mount Tahoma 57-36 on Saturday.
Friday night’s loss created a loser-out situation in the 4A West Central District tournament for the Vikes, who are but a mere two consecutive wins away from the prize: a berth to the state tournament.
TACOMA — Saturday didn’t unfold the way Kingston wrestling coach Bobby Reece envisioned.
On one hand, the career of a senior came to an unfortunate end. On the other, the Buccaneers got a glimpse at just how bright the future might be.
The Bainbridge Island Golden Eagles have soared their way into the record books. Athletes from Poulsbo and Bainbridge Island combined their hardwood talent to secure two gold medal wins at a recent regional competition in Bremerton. The two teams will move on to the state competition in Wenatchee. The is the first time in about 10 years the team has made it to the state competition.
KINGSTON — Kevin Strozier takes referee taunting to a whole ‘nother level. In his passionate pleas for equality in foul-calling Friday night against Sequim, he stood toe-to-toe with a man in stripes on more than one ocassion. At several points in the game, it looked like the Kingston High head coach was going to be bounced off the court a tad early. He somehow managed to contain his temper long enough to finish the game.
KINGSTON — There’s a saying that the Kingston girls basketball team has heard —repetitively — all season. Good basketball players focus on what they do well and don’t worry about what everyone else does. So says head coach Kevin Strozier, who knows a thing or two about basketball.

It looked like the Kingston Buccaneers were finally going to get their first elusive win this season over the Olympic Trojans. But even senior Jack Clearman’s stellar 27-point performance wasn’t enough to clinch the victory.
