POULSBO — The Poulsbo Middle Panthers added another win to its already flawless record, as it pounced McMurray Middle School of Vashon Island, 51-30.

Led by a strong defense, the young basketball team boosted its record to 3-0 on Thursday afternoon.

“Again the win was a case of our defense stepping up and causing turnovers,” said head coach Glen Godfrey. “We also ran the fast break better than we have in the past.”

Leading the defensive push were Lexi Simmons with 10 rebounds and 8 points while Delanee Nilles tallied 5 steals and 12 points.

Complimenting the budding defense was sound offensive shooting from Indika Bray, who lead the team with 13, and Jocelynn Wright, who sunk 8 point and coordinated 5 assists.

“Delanie and Indika did a really good job running the team from the point guard position,” Godfrey said.

Although the Panthers have shown it’s a team to contend with, it still has some work to do before meeting the undefeated Kingston Cavaliers on Thursday March 6 in Kingston.

Fundamentals are the focus.

The Panthers are concentrating on shooting the ball with the left hand, making correct passes, moving their feet on defense and keeping out of foul trouble.

“We’re emphasizing a lot of the fundamentals, which will really help them when they get to the high school level,” Godfrey said. “The kids are really trying to do it and we’re making a lot of progress.”

Catch the Panthers at home on March 3 at 3:30 p.m. when they take on Hawkings Middle School and at Kingston on March 6 also at 3:30 p.m.
